Not discerning the body

What does not discerning the Lord's body in 1 Corinthians 11 mean to you?

I always understood it meaning internalizing Him and His sacrifice with great awe and reverence, viscerally, to the core of our knowing, not taking Him or His sacrifice lightly.

What does it mean to you?

“24 And when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, Take, eat (the remarkable thing about this is the interpretation our Lord gives): this is My Body, which is broken for you (is meant to symbolize the Death of Christ on the Cross): this do in remembrance of Me. (This pertains to the Believer actually partaking of that Sacrifice by Faith. In brief, this is the meaning of the New Covenant.)” 1 Cor. 11:24

There are many layers of meaning to that phrase.

From the Old Testament, a direct reference to Jesus, Yeshua. Man shall not live by bre4ad alone but by ever word which proc eeds from th emoouth of God." In the NT Jesus declares He is the Bread from Heaven……..He is the Word. How appropriate He was born in a town called Bethlehem, Beit Lechem, or in English House of Bread....

Jesus sacrifice, what it meant for him to give his body up for all mankind. It cost his life. It was cut short, he could have lived to a ripe old age on earth but he was killed at age 33.

Not discerning the body, in short: That by their improper manner of observing this Christ given ordinance, they would expose themselves to the divine displeasure & punishment.

1 Corinthians 11:29, with reference to partaking of the bread and the cup of the Lord's Supper unworthily, by not "discerning" or discriminating what they represent;

Early in the chapter & again at the end. The Apostle rebukes those in the Church/Body that treated partaking in the Lord's supper as it were a shared common meal. They wern't discerning this sacred partaking as the rememberance/memorial ordinance (vrs 24-26) the Lord had ordered it to be.

1 Cor 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: """this is my body, which is broken for you""": """this do in remembrance of me""".

1 Cor 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
(NOTE: In the Lord's Supper/communion we """Remember""" the past. This covenant that brings us the forgiveness of sins was ratified, or "cut," by the shedding of Jesus blood & His broken body. And forever sealed in resurrection power

1 Cor 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, """ye do shew the Lord's death till he come""".
(NOTE: When we partake, we memorialize the the Lord's death until he comes)

Ex 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
(NOTE: This Passover Feast/ordinance shall be MEMORIAL)

Passover & The Lords Supper/Communion meals are both given as meals of memorial/remembrance.

For Jews, the Passover meal was given to memorialize/remember: Their deliverance from slavery & 10th plague/angel of death.

For Christians, 1 Cor 5:7 (C) For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
(NOTE: The Lords Supper is our Passover meal. When we partake, we are to remember His Sacrifice that delivers us from sin & death)

Like Passover Christ's Last Supper with His disciples ended with the singing Hallel hymns (Ps 113-118 - Mat 26:30 & Mk 14:26)

Well what it means to individuals is not nearly as important as what it means biblically. The intent of this passage is to correct improper behavior in the Corinthian church. They had turned the Lords supper into a party and many became drunk in the process. They had created division in the body between the haves and the have nots.

They were not keeping the Lords table a holy and sacred time of self examination and consecration to the Lord.

We are to remember what they were doing wrong and keep ourselves from such unholy conduct.

It means not knowing the sufferings of Jesus.

Most fail to acknowledge the Corinthian assembly was immature, carnal and had some 15 or so errors that had to be corrected.......and yet MANY like to use it as a shining example........tragically......

I see it as a two-fold emphasis on 1) Christ's literal Body -- His sacrifice for us, and 2) Christ metaphysical body -- the church. His sacrifice and our remembrance of it through the Lord's Supper is meant to unify all who believe in Christ as One Body. And yet, many of the Corinthians were using the occasion to divide up into their cliques and have dinner/drinking parties with their friends. It was not a shared remembrance of Christ's sacrifice and the unity we share in Him, but rather an excuse to serve their own self-centered and sinful desires. A key point is that our practice of and attitudes toward the Lord's Supper should direct us and others toward Christ and not towards ourselves.
