The generations between David and Jesus do not match on the books of Mathew and Luke. Why?

Some people say that one of them is Mary's genealogy and the other is Joseph's. Others say that Matthew wrote the genealogies according to Jewish tradition where a child is counted through a deceased brother's name if he had no children rather than the true biological father.

the understanding that one genealogy is taking into account marriages to a deceased brother's wife ((as is tradition, and commanded in the law)) and the other only direct heritage goes back to Eusebius, ~ early 4th century
the understanding that one is tracing Mary's line and the other Josephs is more modern. these are the two major schools of thought.

the Jewish people have always been very meticulous about record keeping, particularly genealogy. it's therefore from an historical sense very unlikely these are 'errors' or 'mistakes' -- even if you have a low view of scripture and don't believe it is the word of God.
one peculiarity of Hebrew genealogical records tho is that there is no word for 'son in law' or 'grandfather' -- a son by marriage is still called 'son' and a great-great grandfather, however many generations removed, is still called 'father.' sometimes when giving a record of genealogy generations are omitted, because the record is being given to establish descendancy through particular people. Matthew for example is giving a record of 7's, and if you compare what is written there with 1 Chronicles, you will find some omissions. this is consistent with the idea that these are been recorded with a particular purpose.

when we look at the Bible and see mysterious things in it, we shouldn't read it with the thought 'what can i find that's wrong with this?' -- but look at it with the thought, 'this is the word of God, why is it written like this?' -- why are these people listed here, in particular? which is a very long study, because we need to understand the typology of what each person represents.
from that standpoint, they differ because Matthew and Luke have two different primary intents by giving these genealogies. to understand why they differ, then, we need to fully understand what the intent of each is, so we need to fully understand what the meaning of each record is -- what the Christological typology of the particular set of names is.

that's going to take a thousand pages and more years of study than i have to comprehend.

I really do not know. I just found the difference when I read the bible. So I posted here to know if anyone has any idea about it. However I got some inputs from victor1999, posthuman and whispered. Thanks to them.
