I understand that the Holy Spirit seals the people of God. I notice also that a believer can grieve the Spirit. What happens when the believer grieves the Holy Spirit?

It causes separation, distance from God. It`s not something you want to happen.

I only have cats. They both hate the vacuum cleaner.
"And the Lord said unto the people, Put away thy wickedness from before mine eyes, and vacuum thy cats, and make thyself clean."

I believe such heart hardens.
Instead of God bringing up things He wants to correct and take away so one can inherit eternal life, since they don't want to hear Him, He warns less and less and they fall away more and more from God. It's a slippery slope... like the Pharaoh didn't want to hear, and the more he didn't want to hear, the more his heart got hardened, and so on. I highly doubt that the people who do this and test God like this have been born again to begin with, since they heard the truth but the truth doesn't seem to have taken root in their hearts...

I couldn't resist making cat jokes when I saw the OP's avatar... but I guess a serious answer is in order.

First, here is the pertinent passage:

Eph 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

Eph 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

1. We need to read the whole chapter to get the full meaning

2. In verse 1, he begins telling us what it means to "walk worthy", and this means, essentially, how to go through our daily life in a way that pleases God.
This is about daily living and conduct.
It's a chapter on practical living.

3. In verse 12 it talks about being equipped for ministry, and how living correctly, having this "right walk", equips us for the ministry of building up our brethren in Christ.

4. In verse verse 15 it talks about how we are to "grow up"... this is talking about spiritual maturity. We minister to others when we can be "spiritual grown ups"... and that is our destination.

5. In verse 16 it talks about how all the brethren fit together into one body, and when we are mature we are working properly in the body, and helping everyone else.

6. As we work our way down the passage, we learn more and more about this "walking worthy" and "growing up", and how this serves the whole body... many principles of christian maturity and conduct, and how we serve the body in this way.

7. Finally, in verse 29 our right conduct is put into antithesis against wrong conduct, and we are told not to grieve the holy spirit.
This is in tension against the rest of the chapter, this is the opposite of what we're being told throughout.

The point is this:
When we FAIL to "walk worthy", and we FAIL to "grow up", and we FAIL to minster to the rest of the body...
then we don't ONLY GRIEVE THE REST OF THE BODY, we also grieve God himself, and since his spirit in INSIDE US... we actually GRIEVE OURSELVES.

When we fail in our walk, we grieve God, and grieve ourselves.
God's spirit, which is inside us, will be pained... and this will pain us also.
We will literally put ourselves into pain, and anguish, when we fail to "walk worthy".

God Bless.

You can sell vacuums to clean cats...
and...
you can sell the same people some "cat insurance."
They're gonna need it.

Believers are to put off our former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of our mind, and put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-24) In verses 31-32, Paul goes on to say, "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you."

Such sinful behavior mentioned in the above chapter can certainly grieve the Holy Spirit and the result is suppressing or quenching the Holy Spirit and who of us at one time or another has not grieved the Holy Spirit? This can bring grief upon ourselves, which can also quench our joy and peace, along with hindering godly behavior and can ultimately lead to chastisement from the Lord - (been there, done that). Nothing is mentioned about the Holy Spirit unsealing us. Believers are sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession/unto the day of redemption. (Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30)

If people aren’t born again then they didn’t have the Holy Spirit to begin with. But this leads me to ask, does the Holy Spirit grieve people who do not know the Lord?

It means he is grieved, or cause sorry or sadness,

We do this to our parents when they try to help us and we decide to do it our own way and get hurt,

As loving parents though, they love us, and although some get angry, loving parent grieve and are saddened by the fact they tried to help the child and the child did not listen and suffered the consequence. The parent wanted to bless the child and keep him or her from pain, but the child did not listen

We do the same when we grieve the HS.

What a great thread, that has me 🤔🤔🤔🤔🙏🤔🤔!!! Thank you CherieR....

  • T – Is it Truthful?
  • H – Is it Helpful?
  • I – Is it Inspiring?
  • N – Is it Necessary?
  • K – Is it Kind?
That is a great anacronym I came across... It helps me to think before I speak. Sometimes, I forget or just neglect to, lol.

Anyway...

To deeply sadden the spirit, is to deeply sadden ourselves. When we ignore those pangs of grief and plunge forward in that which grieves Him, we can even quench it. Talk about feeling empty. Or is the grieving what happens when we quench? R they the same?

Hmmmm, now I ponder more.

It has already been well expressed, using scriptural reference, what it is to grieve the spirit.

I think we are so blessed that His spirit makes His condition, or response, in our walks so evident.

I believe we have further instruction and guidance here...

We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

"Farthing" are "different from believer to believer. But, it goes "something like this."
Matthew 5
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Like a "spiritual incarceration", of sorts.
