To really help a person, how soon do we need to use Christian terminology?
Isnt being human our best asset? Listening. Having an agenda as a Christian seems like liability to me. To spread the gospel I mean. Dont we help people best by avoiding agendas?
give some praise here..tabin does it well on this forum...

We do help by listening,encouraging,loving and being Christ extended heart!

These over theological verbage,egotistical ,look at "ME" people are just puffed up turn offs!

Jesus used examples in their day to day living to give and teach them the word and about the purpose of His mission!

Wise as serpents.......harmless as doves......works for me!

I don't have to choke a person with what " I KNOW"!

Just love,listen and show His love by examples of kindness in word.......or off CC by being a friend!

depends on the person you (as a Christian) are talking to.
some might expect Bible quotations for example, if they are a lapsed Christian who is returning.
anyway...in this weird cyber world, there are people feeling confused,alienated and lonely. They need attention. They need some validation. They need a caring attitude. An eager overly zealous Christian is more likely to reinforce feelings of cynicism and negativity. In my opinion that is

I agree it depends on whom is being spoken to!
The Holy Spirit will give what to say if He is working on both ends!
I do see all the confused that cry out and get slapped down!
I see the depressed,hurt,lonely sincere seeking people as well that get overlooked!
No one is beneath me!
My life has been hard but He has been faithful to hold me when I had NO strength!
I CANNOT love Him enough!
I try to show that love from Him to others as well!

I do not even want to imagine where I would be without Him!

Christian zeal is a problem though. If a person thinks they have found "the truth". Such a person is less sensitive to the needs of someone lonely and searching. And more tuned into their own need to share their newly discovered secret. Ive made that mistake myself. Being overzealous. Its an easy error to make.

I too when I first found Him wanted everyone to know how Awesome He is!
It is accepted. Time ,study ,prayer and listening to God help in maturing the believer!


It's those that think " They are the only ones that know Him and His correct plan that I find offensive!

Like if share the word with someone at first the may not want to listen or accept what you say. The main thing you shared, down the road they start thanking about what you said and seek answers.

My family and friend sub culture is very sensitive to phoniness.
You can very easily be ridiculed for using Christian and Biblical words and phrases.
"Jesus died for your sins you know". That kind of statement might see you ostracised forever. 😂

People know if you care about them. They also know if your attention towards them is for your own agenda. I was once in another country and was on the receiving end of someone who was suddenly all smiles and wanted to share the good news of Islam with me . I let her know I was a Christian. The smile fell off of her face and conversation stopped. I was no longer of interest. It was definitely a learning experience. She approached me the same way some church people approach strangers. I pray that God helps me to love, to be transparent, to listen and be humble.

When I was a fundamentalist I was always looking for a way in to people's lives to share "the truth". Poor guys! Their views and understanding of life was basically irrelevant because I was in possession of absolute truth. My help always came with an agenda.....could I use it to witness to them?. When I left fundamentalism with all the cliches, verses and right answers it was a shock and freeing at the same time. A shock to discover a human being just like me with wonderful qualities and pain in the ass qualities (since I had been taught they were totally depraved), and freeing in that I could meet them as an equal. Rather than me helping to "save" people, in many ways the "non-believers" helped save me......I,m grateful for that.

There is so much wisdom to what you say here.
Our Christian zeal is actually an obstacle. To sit "alongside" someone as a fellow human being, we need to shed all our illusions about ourselves. Christianity is not meant to give us status above other people . It doesnt matter if we have memorised the Bible. If we dont have natural status free compassion for others, we arent even helping ourselves.

so I end up embracing what many regard as a backslider liberal Christian stance. But i would rather avoid the rigidity of more conservative Christians.
Liberals can in fact be rigid in their belief too.
we all need to lighten and watch Life of Brian more often, in my view.

Or maybe you have taken on other people's judgements about what it means for you to be a Christian? Who knows a persons heart enough to call them a "backslider"?

yeah thats right.
well i dont read the Bible every day for example.
i might agree with some (very few) women to have abortions.
even euthanasia has got me wondering.
but i realise you need the hardline view on this. i understand why people are black and white about those issues. someone has to draw the line.

Many excellent points are made in this thread. Thanks everyone for displaying something else than the black and white Christianity that seems to be law of the land for some very eager posters at cc.
