I like the idea that the word "cosmetics" is derived from "cosmos" and the term really means bringing order out of chaos!
Well, that’s the sorry truth for me at least😁.

I don't immediately know what the set length of time for the Ladies Forum to appear is (it should kick in automatically) but I went ahead and turned it on manually for ya.

Is it wrong to spend money on nice clothes even if they are modest?
Proverbs 31:21-22 KJV: (The Proverbs 31 woman)
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

Hmm.... I’m thinking that has to do with the person doing so. I don’t think makeup is sinful, but why are they using it? Is it to look nice and presentable, or because they want to be able to say they use Sephora? Same with clothes. You can wear something modest but still be focused on the brand stamped all over it.

And I hate to say but godly modesty applies to us all, kids or no kids. Too many want to be a “hot mom.”

As with most things, makeup and clothing can be a source of pleasure, self-expression, meaningless, or a snare. You need to consider the condition of their mind and heart on the subject and the lone one who can is the Lord. He sees through our blinders.

I’m not a fan of being anyone’s quasi Holy Spirit .I have directed well-meaning busy bodies who can’t resist sharing their opinions (with me and never the intended) to mind their business. I have no interest in covert one upmanship or gossip disguised as help.

And without a word from the Lord and a clear prompting to raise the issue the likelihood of doing so is slim. Simply put, I don’t know her story. I’m not privy to the experiences which may contribute to her behavior good or bad. Things are rarely as they appear. If I felt concern my responsibility is to pray on their behalf.

In light of the growing epidemic of overweight and obese people in our country. And the glaring silence about the problem from pulpits and study groups. Clothing and makeup are minor when compared to the elephant in the room. Before you raise the subject with another make certain you’re willing to be scrutinized in return.

The possibility of pettiness and jealousy are another factor. Motives aren’t always as harmless as they appear. To protect my sanity and minimize unpleasant exchanges, I keep company with women whose disposition and resources are in line with my own. We appreciate each other’s beauty and uniqueness. It’s not a competition.

I don’t believe it is a sin for a woman to care for her temple. Whether that includes low maintenance activities or greater indulgences is her discretion. If she has the means for each and it isn’t an encumbrance; her election to do so is not my concern.

And it matters not what men think. The lone opinion that counts is from the one you walk beside. The jurisdiction for the rest is moot. He should save that for the one he’s with. I wouldn’t entertain the discussion with either.

Hello all

For young women, is it deceitful to wear makeup?

Is it wrong to spend money on nice clothes even if they are modest?
Hi, Court!

I replied to a similar question in the Ladies forum, but in case you're around (or for other readers), I will share my observations and personal experience on the topic here as well.

The Scriptures that come to mind when thinking about this are:

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Now, these verses don't explicitly mention make-up. But the general idea is to avoid vanity and self-glorification and the seeking of attention from others.

What I have noticed is that, there are quite a few downsides to wearing make-up as a woman of God (and the same could be applied to wearing "costly attire" or "revealing clothing", to some extent):

  1. - it can encourage insecurity. When you wear make-up, you generally think you look "better". So when you remove the make-up, you think you don't look as good, and that can create a toxic cycle of feeling insecure / self-conscious. It can go as far as not wanting anyone to see you without make-up, or feeling inadequate if one day you can't apply it and have to go outside, etc.

  1. - it can encourage vanity. This might just be the biggest one. Wearing make-up usually implies we want to look better. But wanting to look better can quickly turn into excessive self-focus and make us very concerned with how we look, how attractive we are to others, our image and reputation, etc. This is in essence a very self-centered position and counter-productive to a selfless approach to life and others. It also often means spending a lot of time focused on ourselves and not for any real good reason other than vanity (applying the make-up, thinking about how it comes across to others, worrying about if it's still in place, etc.)

  1. - it can encourage sinful thoughts / behaviors in others. Depending on the amount of make-up, and the style, it can make you more sexually enticing and make a brother stumble. If you wear lipstick (especially bright in color) that will almost certainly draw attention to your lips, for example. Could also invoke flashbacks as regards to graphic content with similar make-up, etc.

  1. - it ultimately begs the question: "Why?" -- why wear make-up at all? If God created us, and we have the face that we do, why want to adorn it or "embellish it"...? Of course, I understand that we live in a fallen world and our bodies aren't perfect, and sometimes we want to improve them and the way they look. But there's this sense of in-authenticity, or 'mask', when applying make-up, and it does alter one's attitude (or can). I believe wearing make-up can often give access to the Jezebel spirit to operate within a woman; I have seen it several times and have even experienced it myself. A woman's countenance can easily change depending on if she's wearing make-up or not and there's a spirit of seduction that often goes along with wearing make-up. It's very subtle and I don't think the woman herself even necessarily realizes it, but it can be seen in their eyes and in how they carry themselves. Sometimes it's very spooky.

As for my personal experience, the Lord convicted me of wearing make-up a bit less than 2 years ago or so. It started slowly and wasn't a big "STOP WEARING MAKE-UP!" shout or anything. I just went on a make-up fast for Lent (I wanted to detach myself from fleshly things) and eventually after a few weeks, I realized I couldn't wear make-up anymore because every time I would apply it, I'd feel wrong and like I wasn't "myself". It was kinda spooky. My self-perception also changed a lot during that time and for the first time in my life, I actually started finding myself more beautiful without make-up. (I could never have imagined going "make-up free" before. Ever.).

I still continued to wear some here and there, but very subtle, like a bit of faint glitter on my eyelids, or eye pencil below my lower lashes, but eventually even that started feeling kind of wrong.

I am not "legalistic" about it though and don't tell women to stop wearing it; however I do believe it is important to pray about it, especially if there's even a tinge of conviction in one's heart / conscience about one's personal use of make-up (and one's clothing, too).

In my case, the make-up was a kind of bondage and it needed to be broken. So I'm not saying I will never wear make-up again or that it's always wrong... I am still learning about all this and this is where I believe the Lord wants me to be, at this point in my walk. : )

Sorry for the long post... and I hope it doesn't offend anyone. It's just my current understanding / position on that. As the hymn goes, "Take it to the Lord in prayer"... : )

I wasnt into makeup so much but the clothes thing concerned me as a young woman, When you are young of course you want to look your best, but you dont need to spend excess money on it.

Having a working wardrobe is something all women need some help with..lets face it men dont really have that problem they can just get away with wearing the same clothes everyday and nobody would care. something to be said for uniforms!

good news is that God can help you with that. He wants to clothe you in garments of praise.
if you buy good quality clothes that you are going to keep wearing for more than one season, then it is money well spent. so make sure it fits, make sure it can go with whats already in your wardrobe.

as for colour, some women go for any colour and some just stick to a defined palette. I would say find a colour that suits you the best and build around it. You do feel better if you wear your favourite colour.

I know I get overwhelmed when I need to go clothes shopping, way too many choices, and having to find aomething that fits. If you can sew, its probably better but, its the time you need to find the fabric, the pattern etc. You need a good eye for textiles and drapery. My beef is that there might be a lot of clothing out there but a lot of it is polyester which is basically plastic fibres and it isnt good on your skin or for the environment, doesnt last and tends to pill, warp or fade. I would go for cotton or wool over synthetic just for comfort factor.

if you just need clothes to stop being naked well any cotton sheet will do just tie it around yourself, but not all of us live in the islands or in Rome where you could just do that lol.

A lot of the comments have to do with women who slather on the cosmetics. There is a middle ground between that and no makeup. I do not think it is a sin issue, but like most things, it is an attitude of the heart thing. I wear makeup. There. I said it. It is natural looking. It evens out the skin tone, opens up my eyes a little and a little gloss on the lips looks nice. I am comfortable in my own skin but I like to look after my appearance. It is not an obsession or a vanity. For some women it is a way of facing a scary world. Often women who have been bullied or abused wear heavier makeup in order to hide. Please do not judge them so harshly. We do not know people's stories. When I was struggling with illness I would put on lip liner and lipstick rather than just gloss because I wanted to put on the look of health. It helped me feel stronger going out so people didn't notice the pain or damage done by the meds. It was never heavy makeup but at no time would I have considered it sin. As far as deception goes, I credit men with more intelligence. When you meet a woman with sparkly purple lips or eyeshadow, you know it is not what the skin actually looks like. False eyelashes are also rather obvious. I say to the ladies, have fun. Enjoy pink nails or a bit of blush. Know your own heart and don't let others make you feel less than your own beautiful self, makeup or no makeup.
