Does this sound like the start to a joke? To me it does, but it was actually part of this morning's sermon during worship at my church.

Our pastor told a story of a Christian being at the base of a mountain with some others, all of different faith backgrounds. And one of them said: "The paths up this mountain are kind of like our different faiths....there are different paths up the mountain just as our faiths offer different paths up to God".

The Christain replied: "I don't have to go up to meet my Lord, He came down to me".

I'm sure others have probably heard this allegory before, or a variation, but it was the first time I had heard it. And how fitting during the Christmas season as we celebrate Jesus' coming into the world, The Word made flesh.

Fittingly we also sang "What a Beautiful Name", one of my favourite contemporary Christian songs. There's a line in the song that fits perfectly with this message, it goes: "You didn't want heaven without us, so Jesus you brought heaven down".

I've seen many messages here that frown on church attendance, about getting bogged down in religion and missing out on the relationship. For me attending worship and belonging to a faith community has helped strengthen my relationship with my Lord and Saviour, especially since moving to a new church about a year and a half ago.

Here's the video for Hillsong Worship's rendition of the song mentioned above....our church doesn't do it as well, but it was still an awesome job.
