I am posting this topic because of the chatroom question raised over Jonah in the belly of the fish, and all of the surrounding debate around this. I believe the bible can be taken literally in terms of what transpired. Lets analyse these verses:

Jonah 1
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah 2

2 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. 2 And he said:
“I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction,
And He answered me.
Out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
And You heard my voice.
3 For You cast me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the floods surrounded me;
All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.
4 Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight;
Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’
5 The waters surrounded me, even to my soul;
The deep closed around me;
Weeds were wrapped around my head.
6 I went down to the moorings of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;
Yet You have brought up my life from the pit,
O Lord, my God.
7 “When my soul fainted within me,
I remembered the Lord;
And my prayer went up to You,
Into Your holy temple.

8 “Those who regard worthless idols
Forsake their own [b]Mercy.
9 But I will sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay what I have vowed.
Salvation is of the Lord.”
10 So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

>We can take this account from Jonah LITERALLY. He was swallowed by a fish. He (his BODY) was in the fish 3 days. There is no suitable living environment within a fish (air pocket, condominium, economy class seating). Jonah died. He wasn't being preserved alive within the fish.
>Jonah gives the account - out of Sheol (Hell) he cried out. This is not to create a precedent that others can cry out from hell and be delivered in the same way. No. It just means that God is sovereign and can do as He pleases. He can bring low and He can lift up.
>Jonah's body was in the fish but his soul was in Sheol.
>Hell looks to be a place under the earth for this is where Jonah describes it.
>We also see with the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man saying engaging with Father Abraham. Conversation/communication is possible within this spiritual nether realm.
>So it is not impossible for Jonah to call out to God from Sheol, and his prayer went up to the Holy Temple.

Now we have an interesting account coming from the Words of our Lord:

Matthew 12
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You."
39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
>Jonah Died and Jesus Died.
>Jonah was alive after 3 days, Jesus was alive after 3 days.
HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAH here are a few words that accurately describe the op of this thread...

supposition
noun -->a belief held without proof or certain knowledge; an assumption or hypothesis

erroneous
adjective--> wrong; incorrect.

incorrect
adjective -->not in accordance with fact; wrong

There is NOTHING in the text to suggest that Jonah died and went to hell and to say that GOD could not sustain a man in the belly of a great fish not only reeks of ignorance, but devalues GOD to an inept weakling with no power.....

No wonder I have you on ignore.....back to Iggyville you go.....

Differentiating between psalms 16 as for Jesus and 88 fits Jonah and Jesus,
Does not make you right.
Luk 24:44 KJV And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
See it all concern Jesus...
If you refer other soul other than Jesus concerning him in the prophecy/psalms. Thats putting another Holy One...Jesus is the only one.
Even david in his psalm refer to the Lord.
Point well taken. The hell jonah speaks of is at the bottom of the mountains. When he leaves that place he is brought up. After three days and three nights he prays, having been brought up from corruption. His soul has returned to his body and is physically alive once again.

All of this points to the Lord Jesus Christ who died for our sins, descended into hell to deposit thos sins, rose again and left the tomb to live forevermore in His resurrection body. What Jonah was in type, Jesus is in substance.

Did the fish have gas?
Was it a methane type environment?
How much O2 do you think he had before he ran out of air (3 days worth?)

But feel free to ignore all the references to hell.
We will ignore your supposition which is not factual

Yes, God could do that, but there have been several men swallowed by a whale and cut out of the belly days later still alive. That’s no miracle. The miracle is his resurrection.

False....NO verse indicates he died......JESUS gave up the ghost and DIED....it is stated as clear as can BE....JONAH is writing from HIS perspective of being in the belly of a great fish....NO where does it say HE DIED and it is type, picture painting of CHRIST actually being in the GROUND (tomb) three days and three nights....JUST AS all the OT PICTURES DO..they are a PICTURE and TYPE....

Passover
Brazen Serpent
Water from the Rock

JESUS was clear...JUST as JONAH WAS three days and THREE nights in the WHALE'S BELLY.....NOT in the heart of the EARTH.....

You guys take way too much lateral freedom to push this idea NOT supported by scripture.

QUOTE one verse that states verbatim that JONAH gave up the ghost or died!

If ye fish had gas, Jonah would have been shot out the other end.

Read the posts before making such a claim. Tons of Scripture has been provided. What was Jonah’s condition in the belly of the whale? As Jonah, so was the Lord. It’s way more about just the time period three days and three nights.

40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Dude.....do you think I do not study? I have read it, I have studied through it 4 times in Seminary and have taught the book no less that three times from front to back in the last 30 years....IT does NOT support JONAH dying.....the MIRACLE is that he was KEPT ALIVE and delivered so he could preach to NINEVEH......the WORDS he used were INSPIRED of GOD because as a TYPE he is speaking of and using words that are POINTING to CHRIST.....

USE your head man......and quoting verse 40 does not make your point...IF anything is stands against your point.

OK.
The Book of Matthew chapter 12
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

I’ve known him a while and on many things we agree. The literal interpretation of Jonah, we do not agree. That’s ok. It’s not something to lose fellowship over like the poster earlier who went off the deep end on me. Wow! Could you believe that post?

Actually, we’re the ones that are claiming the literal interpretation. Like the belly of hell really describes being alive in the whales belly. I see this as nonsense. It’s literally the belly of hell, the heart of the earth.

If you know that Jesus was not alive when He was three days in the tomb, then you should know the verse does say precisely that about Jonah's three days and nights in the belly of the great fish.
If you insist Jonah was not dead there, then you are insisting Jesus was alive in the tomb.

Just an absolutely ludicrous statement..... it doesn't even warrant a response except that it pains me too much to allow your slander remain unchallenged!!

Bible does not say that at all.......it states clearly the belly of the whale....and yes indeed you are spiritualizing away the verbiage.....the bible is full of verbiage that points to something without actually being the object pointed at......but hey.....the originator of the op regularly skews the truth and you jumped right in with him....carry on!
