If they can be, that would be the responsibility of their Shepherd. Whereas the Shepherd that is Christ has told us,He will lose none that the Father, Jesus was the Father, has given Him.

The passage is talking about those who did not accept the Good News. They did not believe in it, and as a consequence the Father does not abide in them.
They went out from us because they were not one of us.We are all one in Christ. There is no Jew, Gentile, rich, poor, male, female.
