Why do I immediately feel like speaking in tongues when I pray out loud?

Hi Redpanda, maybe you are deceived. Speaking in tongues in the bible view is another (earthly) language.

And speaking in tongues should bring glory to God and it is gift to edify the church not for selfish purposes.

And tongues, cannot replace real communion with God.

I disagree with the two other posters; for me personally I experience the same thing. At first I was concerned and didn't know if it was from the Holy Spirit (there's a crazy amount of controversy in the church about this topic), but after much, much prayer and much, much research, I have come to believe and accept that my tongues are indeed from the Lord and that He helps me to intercede during prayer. It's much easier to pray in tongues and it's much more effective, since the Spirit of God knows what to pray for perfectly, and we don't.

Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.

We are also encouraged by Paul to pray in tongues in 1 Corinthians 14:

4The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

5I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

[...]

18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19But in the church, I would rather speak five coherent words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

So what Paul is saying here, is that he wishes ALL would speak in tongues, because it edifies our own spirit, and is a powerful way of praying and communing with the Holy Spirit; HOWEVER, IN THE CHURCH, if you are to speak TO someone, or before the assembly, you need to have an interpreter, because otherwise it does not benefit anyone, since they cannot understand what you are saying. He is not saying you cannot speak / pray in tongues in church, he is saying that you cannot try and communicate with someone in the church (or the whole church) in tongues, because it is unfruitful, since they can't understand what you're saying (and neither can you).

Bottom line... It is normal to have that urge to speak in tongues when you pray and when you worship. It means your spirit gets "going" and intercedes in the spiritual realm. It happens to me all the time.

I'm sorry, the first person to respond to your post is utterly wrong. That is te Holy Spirit moving upon you and there is nothing wrong with doing so. If you are in a church setting, of course, you don't just yell out. lol But I assume you understand the order of tongues in church. Don't let anyone discourage you or tell you this isn't a gift from God. Several here will try to go so far as to tell you you are demon possessed. Please ignore them. Continue to seek the Lord and go deeper with Him. Blessings!

I think this is always a controversial subect. If you are blabbing along and its not anything coherent then thats not of the holy spirit. Most people babble along and thats not correct. Now if its in another language then i would say its possibl its the holy spirit but practice discernment and dont be fooled.
