Water washes flesh and John the Baptist made a straight way with his baptism of repentance. The Spirit is introduced into one Baptism in the form of words that Jesus spoke. Repentance, that is flesh giving birth flesh, is necessary to receive this baptism. To have ears to hear. That's what John baptized for. When Jesus's mother's voice reached John's mothers ears he leapt in her womb. John said he is of the earth and what he offers is of the earth. With ears to hear one can receive baptism of the Lord Jesus. The baptism in the form of words. As they grow in Christ the words are like milk until Jesus approaches His Hour. The first taste of meat was the Bread of life discourse that was rejected by almost all and understood by none. Fitting that the meat of the Gospel begins with the ' too hard teaching ' . The Apostles are almost adults but only one is able to eat what the Word is serving at the foot of the cross. Jesus prepares them in the upper room for their Baptism to be completed by the Holy Spirit with the gifts that give each the power to participate in the Church's mission.

Baptism into John is flesh giving birth to flesh, that is 'born of water'. John prepared a straight way to the Lord. Jesus completes the work of our baptism by Suffering His Baptism on the cross. And then sends the Holy Spirit. The one Baptism into the death and resurrection of Our Lord.

We must be born of water and spirit.

When Jesus was baptised in water, Holy Spirit descended upon him and so he was born from ‘water and spirit’. (Matthew 3:16) A disciple of Jesus who is ‘born from water’ is one who has turned away from a former course of life, repented of sins and been baptised in water.
Those born from ‘water and spirit’ are begotten by God to be sons of God with a future prospect of heavenly life. (John 3:5)

Titus 3: 5, says it well: "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy he saved us, by the WASHING of REGENERATION and RENEWING of the Holy Ghost". Ephesians 5: 26, says it this way: "That he might sanctify and cleanse it, (the church) with the washing of water BY THE WORD". The water represents the work of regeneration of the Holy Spirit, followed by His indwelling into the believer.

I would offer. Repentance is a work of God. Water baptism is a ceremonial law( shadow) showing others a person has a desire to enter the ministry of getting the gospel out.

John 3:25 as why Jesus from the tribe of Judah was doing the work assigned to the Levi .John the last levi.

The literal water represents the doctrines of God falling like rain called the water of the word. It is used to protect the integrity of inspiration heavenly not earthly of the devil . The faithless Jew turned the doctrine of God upside down.
Great parable below.

Deuteronomy 32:1-2 King James Version (KJV) Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

I think that can be seen when manna was fed to the murmuring Jews in the wilderness. Manna meaning what is it? The bread of unfamiliarity our daily bread. The dew as the good foundation of faith was set first.

Numbers 11:9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

I just love it when I hear Jesus' voice in the OT. (y)

John 3:5 KJV
[5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

1. Be baptized.

2. Do not walk after the flesh anymore; put on the new man.

Matthew 3:11-12 KJV
[11] I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: [12] Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

I think being baptised and surrendering fleshly desires is a summary of what Jesus meant.

In regards to the word "water" in John 3:5, there are those who would argue that the natural sense of the passage parallels water with being born out of a mother’s womb and with flesh based on the answer of Nicodemus to Jesus. Simply stated in that case, two births are necessary. The first is a physical, literal, "flesh" birth (which is, of course, accompanied by amniotic "water") and the second is Spirit.

There are also those who would argue that Jesus mentions "living water" in John 4:10, 14; 7:37-39 and in John 7:38-39, we read - "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the source of living water and spiritual cleansing. If "water" is defined as baptism, then we could just as justifiably say, "Out of his heart will flow rivers of living baptism" in John 7:38. If this sounds ridiculous, it is no more so than the idea that water baptism is the source or the means of becoming born again. So to automatically read "baptism" into John 3:5 simply because it mentions "water" is unwarranted.

Yet there are still others who would argue that "water" is used in the Bible as an emblem of the Word of God, and in such uses it is associated with cleansing or washing. (John 15:3; Ephesians 5:26) When we are born again, the Holy Spirit begets new life and we are said to become "partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4). The new birth is brought to pass through "incorruptible seed, by the Word of God, which lives and abides forever" (I Peter 1:23) and the Holy Spirit accomplishes the washing of regeneration. (Titus 3:5)

Born of water is the womb and born of the spirit is the new creation in us.

Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh (water); and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
