2016 The Biggest American Companies Now Owned by the Chinese

Stephen Gandel
March 18, 2016

On Friday, Starwood Hotels agreed to be acquired by Anbang, a Chinese insurance company that is rapidly buying up U.S. hotels, for over $13 billion. Marriott, which had previously made a deal to buy Starwood, is reportedly considering a counter bid. But it’s unlikely that Marriott will be able win a bidding war with the Chinese insurer, which was originally bankrolled by state-owned enterprises and has a war chest of cash filled up by Chinese investors eager for returns.
If it goes through, the Starwood deal would be the largest acquisition ever of a U.S. company by a Chinese firm. Recently, Chinese firms have been on a buying spree. This year, Chinese firms have spent $103 billion on acquisitions of foreign firms, not just in the U.S. That’s nearly as much in two and a half months as the $107 billion that Chinese firms spent on foreign purchases in all of last year, which itself was a record.
Here are the biggest U.S. firms to be swallowed, or are soon to be swallowed, by a Chinese company, according to

1) Starwood Hotels
Deal size: $14.3 billion
Acquirer: Anbang Insurance
Date (announced): March 14, 2016

2) Smithfield Foods
Deal size: $7.1 billion
Acquirer: Shuanghui International
Date: May 29, 2013

3) Ingram Micro
Deal size: $6.3 billion
Acquirer: Tianjin Tianhai Investement Development Co.
Date (announced): February 17, 2016

4) General Electric Appliance Business
Deal size: $5.4 billion
Acquirer: Qingdao Haier Co.
Date (announced): January 15, 2016

1) Starwood Hotels
Deal size: $14.3 billion
Acquirer: Anbang Insurance
Date (announced): March 14, 2016

It is the latest hotel acquisition by the Chinese insurer, which last year bought the company that owns New York’s Waldorf-Astoria. Also this week, Anbang announced its was buying a number of hotels owned by Blackstone. Starwood would add 1,300 hotels around the world to Anbang’s portfolio.

2) Smithfield Foods

Deal size: $7.1 billion
Acquirer: Shuanghui International
Date: May 29, 2013

At the time of the deal, Minxin Pei, a professor of government at Claremont McKenna College, wrote, Some people saw the move by Shuanghui, a private firm based in Henan, as a masterstroke to expand its ability to supply a fast-growing market with premium-brand pork at higher prices. Some view the purchase as a means to acquire valuable hog-farming and processing technology. Others worry that Shuanghui might use Smithfield as a channel to sell its products in the U.S.”

3) Ingram Micro
Deal size: $6.3 billion
Acquirer: Tianjin Tianhai Investement Development Co.
Date (announced): February 17, 2016

No. 62 on the Fortune 500, Ingram Micro agreed earlier this year to be bought by a Chinese firm that specializes in aviation and logistics.

What's really scary? China owns the Chicago Stock Exchange!

That's just starting with 2016. China made the largest company buy in history when it bought Walmart/Sams Club and their domestic holdings for over half a trillion dollars!

Chinese shell companies are also buying properties in America. Notice commercial lands in your area that are for sale. Keep an eye on that if the property is in a prime retail area with lots of traffic to see how long it takes for that realtor sale sign to be changed to, for lease.
Very often the company that bought the land is ultimately owned by China.

There are Chinese banks are also fronting the monies for many of our home mortgages.
How to invade America....buy it. :(

They have not yet acquired Walmart, but they are one of it's largest Suppliers which forced Walmart to discontinue it's Advertising itself as "Made in America."

You have to look long and hard to find something "Made in America" on Walmart's shelves. Other than in the Produce/Dairy Departments. Sad really.

Soon China may own the U.S. altogether. I'll bet our radical, left wing section of government would sell us out in a heart beat. :(

Which is precisely why we have to insure we vote and don't give them a chance at having a majority in our Congress or Presidency. Biden's in China's pocket now. Imagine what he'll sell us for if he gets the office.
And his VP running mate recently championed Communism just 2 days before tomorrows election.

chinese own a lot of property and manufacturing in nz. This has already been going on for many years..since 1984 deregulation, when Britain pulled out of nz and went to the EU for their goods.

I think its a good thing for a country to be self sufficient to a certain extent.

China attempted to be the middle kingdom for many centuries and would not trade with anybody else. The brits then shortchanged them and introduced them to opium, which was a huge scourge.

I dont think americans need to worry about china buying up their manusfacturing since they are actually buying back all the goods made there anyway, but what they do need to be concerned about is if China wants to buy their weapons lol. A HUGE industry in the US. But a lot of Chinese arent interested in making bullets and guns, despite being the inventors of gunpowder.

The US still has their marijuana though. thats something they are good at growing. sigh.

It's worse than we think.

Well, the hemp industry could give the silk industry a run for their money, but it seems US people just dont want to buy hemp clothes they would rather smoke the plant instead.

The finest cotton in the world wasnt American cotton made by slaves back in the day, its actually Egyptian cotton.

Just kill all the homos as per the Old Testament laws and kick/ban all muslims from the Western World. They're the indirect cause of everything bad in this world. The longer you stall, the worse things will get. Put the homos out of their misery already, prevent muslims from living in the west, and you make everyone happy, including God.

in nz cos we are a small country, last century everything was controlled by the brits. they owned most things. then they pulled out to trade with europe and nz was left floundering around for business.

the govt then decided to deruglate and diversify. then trade agreements were set up with australia, japan, and then china. Because china has such a big population, they were able to manufacture things more cheaply over there, that most manufacturers pulled out of nz and went to china, which resulted in huge job losses for locals.

our main export, the one that made the most money, was no longer wool, meat, dairy of even kiwifruit. it was education. scores of richer chinese wanted to send their only sons or daughters to nz schools and universities for an education, to learn english, and gain a degree as it was super hard to gain entry in their own country, places being limited and competition fierce.

I think people need to be aware when they are trading with a country what they themselves are offering and buying or selling in return. It shouldnt always be one way.

today, most of our larger shops are owned by australians. They leverage their buying power with their larger numbers and have basically taken over most all the malls and plonked their chain stores here.
so a lot of that profit is just going straight to australia. a lot of nzers take off and work in australia too, which pays comparitvely better wages.

they have give us also their pesky possums, protected and cherished in their own country, a pest and menace to wildlife in ours. But we are able to now buy cheap australian made food in the supermarket though it doesnt taste as great.

the japanese have basically limited their trade in nz to tourism, golf courses, and sushi outlets.

i think it does make nz a more interesting country to have different people live and work and trade here rather than it just be a distant sheep farm colony for the brits. if the maori had never welcomed them (or rather, got annexed) I am supposing life might be very different....but it seems God wanted to use this land for everyone not just a few people.

oh the us, by the way were kind of welcomed but many of the reserved brits were actually jealous of the wealthy american soldiers who broke hearts and stole women. But nz changed its tune when the us wanted to send nuclear warships to nz and we were like no thanks. also we are not a dumping ground for your toxic waste thanks.

While I disagree totally with homosexuality, they are not beyond the grace of God. If God is going OT smiting people, no one here could stand. Once were lost, now are found. Spread the Good News that all may come to Him.

China owns roughly 15% of our debt, Japan owns 20%

Were at roughly $50,000 for every breathing American?

Probably averaging one years work in the labor camps for every American?

Truth of the matter is, Military strength is a Nations wealth, Sadam Huessein was a prime example,he had the oil, past tense

just a share:

many, many, years ago, hub and I were informed that 'china' was buying-out the 'high-ways' of our home-land,
the daily 'road-ways' that WE ALL TRAVEL day by day to go to work, etc...,,,!!!!
and that our elected officials were 'selling them at a very fast and comfortable rate', by putting up signs that said, 'anyone could be,
a real supporter for our 'highways & by ways just by contributing to keep them maintained/clean and say what ever
their NAME was = HELLO, guess what/who owns us and a vast majority of our own "HOME-LANDS LAND"???
be/get prepared!!!

The West's capitalists thought they could woo China into becoming a democracy and thus invested there (while reaping the benefits of cheap and prison labor). That backfired big time, they win either way, western labor paid the price as usual.

And China wants to buy Australia as well.
I think the Chinese have a 99 year contract on a property somewhere.
Not only that but also the interference in universities, and wherever else.
