History Stories not Taught in School

Watched an episode of the TV Show "Drain the Oceans" tonight. They were featuring New York City Harbor.

One of the Stories was from the American Revolution, and it was a horrible eye opener to the actions of the British Navy.

When the British Navy attacked and captured New York City at the beginning of the Revolution, one of the things that they did was to establish a flotilla of Ships in a place called Wallabout Bay just off the coast of Manhattan. They ferried out to these Ships the thousands of men they captured. Conditions on the Ships were horrific! On one Ship alone, the HMS Jersey, 11,000 men were estimated to have died. That is twice as many deaths as occurred in the entire War! That was just ONE SHIP! The flotilla was called "Hell Afloat."

All through American History in High School, and two Semesters of American History in College, never once did I see this taught.

One fact I found very interesting is that one or more of the Ferry Ships (small wooden ones) they used to ferry the prisoners from the City out to the Prison Flotilla were found buried about 22 feet below the World Trade Center ruins. It just struck me as kinda eerie that the Ferry's used to take so many men to their deaths were buried under the rubble were so many people died.

So, the WTC was built on reclaimed land?

Apparently. Back before it was built...........the part of the land it was built on came from the people extending the land into the water quite some distance. The original view of NYC was far different than what it is now. They did a lot of reconstruction on land and in the water before they got it is the way it is now.

interesting, but history is such a vast subject in of itself that you couldnt possibly teach everything. And many schools curriculums are quite narrow.

I remember studying art history one year and there was no way the course could cover everything, and a lot of it is biased according to whos doing the recording of it. So only learned a small portion of it.

I agree that there is a WHOLE History of History! However, in this instance, I have to wonder IF our Public School System used "selective events" regarding teaching this. I guess if one had a Masters or Doctorate in American History, they would have learned this, but the average HS Graduate, and possible those with a four year Degree from a College never heard of this.

I'm not all angry about this or anything, so do not worry about that. I just found it very interesting that I had never heard of this before. I enjoy learning of History. American and World History interest me greatly.

The irony, for want of a better word, of history, is that it's one sided, and biased. For example, the Brits settling Australia.

Funny how I learn one thing in high school then taught the opposite in college. Like Christopher Columbus I learned greatly in college about what he actually did and who he was than previously in high school. Also some of the wars that USA lost that conveniently don't get talked about.

A member of the Soviet Union government reported after the breakup that they indeed had infiltrated our colleges and universities in the 50's, and those brainwashed students went on to be the teachers of our children and grandchildren, that brainwashing is still with us.
