I need some help I’m not sure if I’m hearing God’s voice or something else. Sometimes I hear a voice in my head telling me not to do things that don’t make much sense to me and I know that not everything God tells us will make sense to us but sometimes I hear things I’m not sure about like telling me I can’t have a cookie or I can’t do my hair or I can’t tell my sister about something I’ve been waiting to tell her about. I’ve given up so many things trying to please this voice because I’m scared if it actually is God and I don’t do what it says I’ll be in trouble but I’m not sure if it’s actually Him

That does not sound like God to me. Not over such trivial things. Honestly I'd see a counselor. Having a mental illness check may yield nothing but it's worth it to know for a fact one way or the other.

Thank you for your reply! I’ve been told other more sensible sounding things directing me towards things like fasting and stuff so I’m just not sure but thank you again I’ll see what I can do about seeing a counselor

Hello @clowe23, since I haven't been a teenager for quite awhile now, I won't reply directly to your OP, but I did want to say, welcome to CCHat :)

God bless you! (Numbers 6:24-26)

Hi Clowe23,
I am glad you are reaching out for help. Sometimes it could be that we don't know how to control ourselves and the enemy tries to bring us down. Reach out to God, you can trust Him. He has got the best in mind for you. I would like to introduce you to Dr Horst Muller. It is 7 part seminar on stress, anxiety, conflicts and depression. You will see a beautiful picture of God. Keep on asking.

I'll echo what @3angelsmsg said...it could be the enemy "messing with you".

Remember that we are children of God...we aren't adults and something micromanaging every step of your behavior and feeling the condemnation or "potential" for that almost as if someone is holding a knife to you to get you to do something is suspicious. High pressured "sales" or what almost feels like "peer pressure" spiritually is not cool and I think that's the flesh at best. Put on the full armor.

So is something that when you can't even see why a thing isn't a sin and have no conviction about it (eating a cookie) and scripture doesn't back it up even in the loosest way (search the bible or ask someone) then it's probably not the Lord. What I do believe is that he is patient when we stumble or are confused by something. If you aren't in willful conscious rebellion (hating God and doing everything you can against him on purpose), there's nothing to worry about...just continue to pray and ask him :)

The Word says to test the spirits because not every spirit is from God.

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1

^Maybe that means just people, but the enemy is an imitator.

God also has not given us a spirit of fear.

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2 Timothy 1:7

If you are afraid to take a step for fear of punishment, and are living in fear, it's probably not the Lord...OR something you just need to move past...

I don't think God is sitting there with a whip to crack at us when we stumble...That's living under a weight that Christ has lifted from us.

There a few more scriptures that probably will make it less clear, but it is a confusing thing to deal with.
Remember also.

"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints." 1 Corinthians 14:33

So if it's getting to a point of almost a spirit of confusion, pretty strong evidence it isn't him. It's definitely an uncomfortable thing to go through. Let me know if there's any scripture you'd like me to find. The Lord is patient and knows we are dealing with our flesh every day and wrestling with sin. We are all works in progress, may he continue to work it out in you in peace and security :)

thank you so much for your insight!! I’ve been looking thought the scriptures on my own to try and find some peace which I also constantly pray for and your response kind of validated some of my thoughts toward my situation. I think I’m generally an anxious person so I’m very confused as to if I’m just anxious about what He’s saying to me which is something I’ll have to continue to pray about. If you know any scriptures that you believe will be helpful please do not hesitate to leave them. Again thank you for your insight !

2 Corinthians 1:2-4
2 Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

John 14:27
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Matthew 6:25-27, 31-33
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Be blessed

Hi Clowe23, and welcome to the forums!

May I encourage you and tell you that I suffer from the exact same thing and know exactly what you mean!

And have reasoned with and about that "voice" many times in my life.

I don't have a profound answer for you, but I've always considered that "voice" as part of the training to discern what is God's Voice and what is not.

I do not doubt for a moment you must hear from the Lord as clearly as you hear that "voice", which is why it is confusing. But the enemy does mimic the Lord's Voice and spikes it with law, then condemns you when you don't "obey" i.e. the biscuit example.

A key way to remember the difference between the Lord and the devil is that the Spirit always convicts; the devil always condemns.

There are other times where the Lord speaks and tests your obedience with something seemingly insignificant - it's all part of our walk with Him, and learning to discern the Voice of God is part of growing up in Him.

The key to your "problem" is to stay in the Word and you will learn to "refuse the evil and choose the good." (Isaiah 7:15).

Another apt Scripture is Hebrews 5:14:

But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who BY REASON OF USE have their senses excercised to discern both good and evil.

The implication is that whist we are still immature, we are going to struggle to discern between the two. Keep asking the Holy Spirit to guide you, and especially-- STAY IN THE WORD :)

But be encouraged: there is nothing "wrong" with you! I'm willing to bet that like me, there is a real fear of doing the "wrong" thing and this "voice" keeps you a little trapped and goes a little overboard.
...As I write, I think its a conscience thing that the devil is playing on, making you feel guilty all the time... and sometimes you might feel like you're in a spiritual straitjacket, am I right? Methinks the devil is on your case a little and it's something you are going to learn to conquer.

Here for you if you ever need to talk :)

Thank you so much for your response! Knowing I’m not alone makes me feel so much better and brings me a lot of comfort. I’ve actually clearly heard God’s voice telling me to fast and this voice is not identical but I know He does not always speak the same way. I hope with time I’ll be able to discern more efficiently and same for you ! Again thank you so much
