When I was growing up this was the most commonly believed and shared verse by Christians.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭

as I’m getting older , I recently began to search the scriptures from a desire to understand many questions that flood my heart regarding the lord Jesus Christ , my hero and savior .

So I’ve studied a lot began to make time to learn from scripture thinking it would help me understand and it is helping for sure I enjoy studying and everything but it seems like the simplicity of the message that God has made this promise the central theme of his word

whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

there can be no better news to a person who is aware of thier state , that death is always approaching and no one can escape it .

To hear and believe Gods promise about never facing death , about being alive even after we die , about never coming into condemnation if we believe .

eternal life really is the good news we can live even though we understand our body has to die because it’s part of the earth , the living part of us our spirit can live with the lord

“ For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him

it’s good news in the simplest of faith , maybe it isn’t about so
Much how much you grasp , but that you believe the things you do grasp

God bless
Hello Pilgramshope, According to the Word there will be many who will think they believed in Christ, to whom Christ will proclaim never having known them (Matthew 7:23). The question then is: What does it mean to truly believe in Christ so that we should not perish, but have everlasting life? To me, to believe in Christ means to believe in what Christ professed and believed, which is to love God and to love our neighbor. To proclaim you believe in Christ, but then hate your neighbor would mean that in fact you do not believe in Christ.
According to the Lord/Word there will also be many who will have thought they did not know the Lord, but through their belief in loving their neighbor are awarded the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 25:34).

yes saying I believe and living as you don’t is like printing counterfeit money and trying to pass it off at the u.s. treasury investigation department it isn’t legal tender to God

we have to believe the gospel brother what he taught , who he is , what he promised us if we do believe , who he taught us we are to him , who he taught us he is To us , how he loves us and how we are to Love each other it’s in the gospel brother that’s salvation

it’s very very important for us as a group to understand the principle of seed time and harvest .

when we become mature Christians and have the beginnings of a good understanding a lot of scripture ect. It’s very easy to make that standard applicable to others who may or may not be at that same stage of understanding or growth .

what I mean is when a plant first sprouts from the ground , we don’t look to harvest fruit from the seedling . We first have to nourish the small plant make sure it has room and light and living water to give it power to grow and strengthen

then over time and perseverance the plant grows into maturity stages and eventually the harvester comes to harvest the fruit . Salvation is a progressive process

a person who hasn’t heard the gospel they hear John 3:16 and some th king in them believes it’s true . That person is now not going to be living acting and understanding like someone who’s been at it 20 years

belief has to be the gospel , and the gospel is designed by God that if we believe and hear it being preached and believe it it has a perfect design to teach us what we couldn’t learn elsewhere and it is designed to heal the problems in our mind and heart

belief is all we need but the thing is whe n the word says what we don’t like to hear or don’t agree with that’s the point we need to repent and believe because it will bring repentance and righteousness the belief of the gospel that is his wisdom and teachings words and all the examples of his love , power and authority .

then we have the apostles and the ot to further build faith and bring us along . It’s definitely enough to believe , it’s a matter of believing the lords word or all of the many ideas that are seeking to convince us not to

belief doesn’t mean I believe so I can live however I want I’m saved “ that’s the kind of belief that will bring death and suffering to us in the end a deception . To believe the truth on the gospel is all we need because he teaches us about repentance obedience ect everything we need is present in the gospel and in our hearts

Exactly.
You can have all knowledge, and understand every mystery, you could have every doctrine correct, you could be right about the timing of the rapture, if there is a rapture, you could be right about tithing, you could be right about Calvinism, you could be right about works and faith.
But you don't love, you have nothing.

if the doctrine is correct in someone’s mind and heart one would agree with your conclusion , if they don’t believe the things the Bible teaches like what you are saying about love , it’s because in thier mind they believe differently .

the thing about love while we can agree on your whole point there what exactly is the love it’s talking about having ? And where do we learn about that love ?

“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us:

and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:16-19‬ ‭

we have a totally different idea of love than God is what I mean to love Gods way is to accept his angle

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:2-4‬ ‭KJV‬

so to say we need to love each other is correct but we need to
Love one another Gods way and let him teach us about how to actually treat each other with love , the love of God

his commandments there were meant to keep without a grievance are the things Jesus taught about brotherly love how to treat each other until he returns .

love has a biblical Meaning it’s found in those teachings like this one this is one example of what love we need to possess

“But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:27-28, 33, 35-38‬ ‭

we need to hear the gospel and accept it to let it form Gods love in us , change the selfish things in us attitudes , beliefs , our ways we have always made excuses for , But know are not of Gods will for us .

It always comes back to believing the gospel because that’s what changes our image from sinners to children of God

it’s not a command on stone but it’s a spiritual understanding Jesus is imparting through belief it teaches us to treat others with love and actually imprints those things on our hearts and minds and reshapes us through belief and the power of Gods word

Yes I agree. Our focus and intentions as children of God should always be love.

Hmm I’m not sure where to go with this one. And I think I agree not sure where this comment fits or why you left it but yes Jesus death was the payment for our sins agreed.

however you do understand who he is and the fact that he forgave sins because of who he is before he died right ?

“When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭2:5-8, 10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

he forgave and offered salvation by faith before he died

“And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭7:48, 50‬ ‭

God didn’t have to wait until Jesus died , people believed in his death and resurrection since Isaiah began writing about it . David was forgiven for sins of death hundreds of years before he died by the same God

it’s not the cross that saves it is the one who willingly went to the cross who saves. When Jesus died , Gid had already foretold that from the beginning just like we believe something that’s 2000 years in the past and are saved by faith , they believed something thousands of years in the future and we’re saved by faith in the same word of God
No one was ' redeemed ' until the cross . They only had remission of sins . No one was saved until the cross . Redemption is through the blood of Christ.

You are rather confused as seen in these comments.

1. Salvation has always been by grace through faith. Abraham believed God and it was IMPUTED to him for righteousness. The entire eleventh chapter of Hebrews tells us that from Abel down to Malachi, the OT saints were all saved by grace through faith. However, they were perfected only after the resurrection of Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Therefore they are called "the spirits of just[ified] men made perfect".

2. The Bible also tells us that Christ -- the Lamb of God -- was slain from BEFORE the foundation of the world. Which means that in the eyes of God, the blood of Christ would be applied to all the OT saints. Nonetheless, they were required to maintain animal sacrifices until Calvary, in order to remind themselves that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.

What do you think people had to believe in Jesus, when Jesus was with them in the flesh, in order to have eternal life?
Jesus Himself is ETERNAL LIFE. Therefore to believe on Him was to receive eternal life (John 11:25,26; 1 John 1:1,2).

What would have happened to Abrahams sins if Jesus never died?

My bible says :
8And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

I have no scenario where anyone is -'saved' apart from the blood of christ .REDEMPTION + REMISSION .Jesus had to redeem all those sins under the first covenant.

Well

Thanks for straightening me out 😊

it sort of seems like that’s your opinion though right ? Or are you speaking for the lord ?

yes o agree revelation reveals that Christ was slain from the foundation agreed .

yes salvstion is because of Gods grace and by our faith in what he says .

This is how Noah was saved

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch...( . many instructions )

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭6:8, 13-14, 22‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That’s grace through faith Noah was saved because he believes Gods word about the flood and obeyed Gods word about the ark . He was saved by his belief

he didn’t say” I believe” and then refuse to build the ark , Noah actually believes there was a flood coming . He couldn’t prove it scientifically but God told him and he believed .

that’s what saved him of he had said “‘I believe lord , but i don’t need to build the ark like your telling me “

that’s because Noah actually wouldn’t have believed Gods word so why bother building an ark ? He believed so what could ever stop him from building an ark that God said would save him and his family ?

Here since you mentioned Hebrews 11

By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house;

by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Noah was saved because he believed what God told him and did what Hod told him to do And be saved . That’s what faith is brother you mentioned Abraham your right he believed

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God promised him a great blessing and homeland and that he would be father of many nations , but all he had was what God told him he believed and so he did what God had said to do

“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him;....
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12:1, 3-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Faith is about hearing what God has said and believing it in other words

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

like Noah one who hears the gospel hears of a coming end soon it is said , they like Noah find grace in the lords eyes so he warns them of the coming end . And he tells them how to be saved and tells them believe what I’m telling you and you will have eternal life and never be condemned

it’s about belief of we believe something well do it if we don’t we aren’t going to
What we believe or “ faith “ is complete when we act like Noah he wasn’t saved by saying I believe he was saved by belief because it moved him to action that’s faith

Interesting, by quoting Mark 16:15-16, you believed that water baptism is necessary for salvation for us now? What do you think of Romans 4:5 then?

I agree with you though that in time past, faith requires a work from man in order to prove it. That is why when Cain was downcast after his offering was rejected by God, God approach him again to remind him in Genesis 4

6 And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

God wants him to do well, that means offer the same animal offering that Abel did, and not just believe well

What we believe or “ faith “ is complete when we act like Noah he wasn’t saved by saying I believe he was saved by belief because it moved him to action that’s faith
It is the believing that saves. Kindly read the 4th and 10th chapters of Romans. Genuine faith does lead to obedience as in the case of both Noah and Abraham. But it is the believing that saves. "BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31)

Believe what about Jesus? That was my question.
That He is Lord, God, and Savior and is able to save to the uttermost those who come to Him by faith (Heb 7:25). Furthermore, that He died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and rose again for our justification according to the Scriptures.
