The word 'holler' is a "southern slang" variant of the [actual original] word 'hollow' (one of its meanings). If someone grows up with the slang word, it is possible that they may never realize it came from a different word/pronunciation/spelling - even if they also use the word it came from...

Holler-A southern slang term for Hollow. Any natural area with distinguishable features from the surrounding natural area. Almost any place can be a holler to a southern person. You can go up to the Holler, down in the holler, out back in the Holler, over to the Holler, out in yonder Holler. A Holler could be anything from strip of land in between a couple rows of pine trees to an entire valley with a city in it, in which case it would have used to have been Holler.
