I do a LOT of tweaking like you guys because I’m a GEEK and proud of it.

I agree see about the time Vista was ending support I thought "wow now I gotta get another OS and learn the bells and whistles all over again,,," then it hit me that if I was about to start with another one and M$ obviously was going to end support for the next one a few years later I may as well just download one of the free ones and learn it. Anyway both guns and systems are just tools like a screwdriver or a hammer in the end.

You guys are like gun enthusiasts who have like 10 assault weapons to “protect their family” while keeping them “secure” - instead of just saying “I like guns”.

Why don’t you just say “I like geeking around” instead of “privacy“?

:)
Those guys said privacy. I never said that.

Are you making assumptions about my nerd orientation here? :cautious:

I just use Linux mint because it's easy and I don't have to mess around with security junk. A child of four could download, install and use Linux mint.

I played around with Fedora a little more. I'm not all that impressed. I noticed that it doesn't have all the software I use. At least not right out of box. That includes both the RPMs and Flatpaks. I don't even think it's got VLC player in the repos. I looked for it and couldn't find it. I looked for MPV and couldn't find it. The Audacity looks to be an old version both flatpak and rpm. I will probably install it in virtualbox and see if I can do some more research, time permitting. But my first look at the xfce and the official gnome version was of disappointment. I hate to say this, but I can't live without puddletag. They at least have kid3 in the repos. But I tend to use both programs with my music and for quick tagging podcasts that I download.

Lynx maybe you are not nerding but these guys here are.
look at them running Os-es from USB and use pre-loaded ssds to format something specific.
‘’That’s super nerdy right there. :)

Did you miss the part where I have run a system from a flash drive for years?

It's quite easy, and comes in very handy for many different things.

Ah, AV Linux. I barely knew ye. I took a look at that before KX made the scene.

I remember when KX Linux came out as a live distro, WITH REAPER ALREADY INSTALLED! It even ran wine-asio, just for Reaper users. As a long time Reaper user, i was ecstatic.

Then I figured out all my vst and vsti were a no-go. Then I got in an argument with the doggone thing, trying to get my MIDI keyboard to work. Then... I don't want to talk about the rest. >.>

Now that AV Linux runs Reaper, I might look at it again. Back in the day all it had was LMMS and Ardour. (Don't get me started on that either.) :p

I got AV Linux up and running on Virtualbox.

Funny thing...

I was going to download AV Linux on the w*rk internet, but it seems the w*rk internet blocks bandshed (the AV Linux home site.)

Blocks it? Really? It's not warez, it's not porn, it's not illegal... It's an OS!

Well it's down to using my own limited monthly data or using the church internet.

In Linux though... What would I do without my RealStrat?

Or my RealGuitar?

Or (whimper!) my Jamstix!!!

See these are all Windows-only payware instruments with vsti plugins you can load in a DAW. I would be... distraught, let's say... without them.

But... But... But that's the whole REASON I like Linux Mint. No tweaking needed.

I don't have to install Java. I don't have to get flash player working (may it rust in peace.) I don't have to do anything with an antivirus. I just install it, check off a few programs on a checklist to install (Audacity, Asunder CD ripper, Skype, etc.) and use it. Installing the programs doesn't even count as tweaking, because the resident package manager handles it automatically.

Yes I'm lazy. But I prefer tweaking soundtracks.

Please. You do MAJOR tweaking because you like it and I do major tweaking because I like it too.
‘first of all I tweak my os before-hand with automated installs so I can sit back and smoke a cigar (approved by a 1960s doctor)
then I tweak apps too because I LOVE it. I create silent installs, I create MSIs with Flexera Admin Studio, and this is all on the client level. I spend weeks on the details because I obsess.
‘but I spend even more time on the bigger umbrella which is my network which protects me from anything.
‘I‘d like to know what it feels like getting a virus or having your data encrypted. It has never happened to me. :(

Thanks but I already stopped by the church and downloaded it. Took a good half hour or so, even on their internet.
For a linux distro, it's a large download, because it's loaded with a bunch of software. Even with as large as it is, it isn't as large as Windows 11. Or should we call it 'bloatware 11"? It comes in at 5.2 GiB and doesn't have half the usable software with it. lol
