Are you a cheapskate? Or know someone who is? Does it annoy you or do you think its a good thing.

Was thinking on this as was having lunch with a friend and I noticed that she was wearing a nice blue ring that complemented the colour of her outfit. I knew it was costume jewellery, so its not like I was exclaiming over a precious jewel. I just said thats a nice ring you are wearing I love the colour it goes with your outfit.

However she immediately said 'oh its cheap' and 'I got from $2 shop'

So I said what, oh you shouldnt say that! Like cheapening what she wears. You could pretend it was worth a million dollars!

Then I wondered why she would say it was cheap cos I wasnt saying it like I was thinking of buying it off her or caring how much it costs.

I noticed she would do this even when she gave me or someone else a gift and even say 'I got it from an op shop" But in her world, that is like the high praise and a point of pride to say she got it cheap or discount.

lol

I then wonder if I should instead start complimenting people on how much their outfits cost them. And highest of praise if they fished it out of the dumpster!

There’s a bunch of them where I’m from. Some of them have possibly inherited traumatized behavior due to, amongst other things, lack of food and etc during the war (the war between states), and then the dust bowl. The families are passing this down through the generations and collecting and prepping has become a part of whom they are.

If thats your definition of a cheapskate then yes, yes I am one. Im always thankful for a discount or great deal and would gladly tell someone " Oh, thank you...I got that for $5 at Goodwill"

Note* you can hardly get anything for $5 at Goodwill anymore.

I do not associate being frugal with being cheapskate necessarily, as many times this is wise. I associate cheapskate with being stingy, such as if your spouse or date makes a good salary but is a tightwad.

or are you just mad because they arent spending all their salary on you...?

But then how do you even know how much money a person has if they are a cheapskate? They could be just being frugal!

I am thinking of examples such as:

- the spouse doesn't take the wife/husband out to eat even when they can afford to do so
- if an employer/business owner is being a tightwad on salary
- if a friend with a good job gets the low priced item on the wedding registry, etc.

Being frugal is fine generally (as being foolish with money is unwise), but it not necessarily a good trait always.

I know some spouses hate eating out not cause they cant afford to do so but because home cooking is better (or they on a special diet or extremely fussy)

employers are ALWAYS tightwads. I have never known a generous employer who didnt start off people on the minium wage.

how do you know a the friend has a good job if all they are getting is minium wage, The job might be good, but they are still on minimum wage, see above!

most employers dont think people should earn salaries, they give out wages by the hour (or are these jobs inherently BAD jobs?)

I think that's just an attempt at modesty and to downplay the appearance of being overly vain. People do that all that time where I am from and I guess it's normal.

my Louis Vitton wallet is actually a cheap imitation!

that kind of thing? I remember I used to use this cloth purse and then I actually got given a Louis Vitton wallet to make me look like I was rich though I felt silly having this rich as looking luxury wallet that was only holding a few coins.

Also you couldnt sell it on trademe cos it was trademarked and they wouldnt accept imitations, even if it was actually real. (You had to have the receipt that you bought it, you couldnt sell a gift you were just given. )

so then I wondered what that was really saying, did my friend think I was cheap AND vain?

I think cheapskates nickel and dime everything when they don't need to. For instance at my job many people want the employer to provide KN95 masks even though these people can clearly afford 12 masks per month (coming in 3x per week).

The thing about salaries is that the company can work you 24/7 without paying overtime. There are exceptions to this though.

? I thought it was access to masks that was the problem, not the cost of them. The proper n95 ones were in short supply. Plus they are PPE for work, as part of your job. if you not protecting your employees it shows you dont care. its not an unreasonable request, like having a decent break so you can actually wash your hands and go to the toilet

Maybe my definition of a cheapskate is someone who skites about being cheap

'I shop at Pak n Save, cos its cheaper than Countdown'

I dont know anyone who boast that they shop at the higher end shops! Maybe those people are called richskates. 'I got it from Tiffanys and paid $1 million for it'

That ain't EVEN a cheapskate.

Real cheapskates do morally questionable things to save amounts of money most people would consider inconsequential.

Example: Saving the McDonald's cup and sneaking it in to use every time you go there, to get free soda. It's a dollar. Yeah, they steal soda to save a whole dollar.

Example: Getting free food by calling a restaurant to complain that you got the wrong order, so they will give you the "right" order for free, when you never even placed an order.

I was out with a different friend today and we walked downtown past the luxury stores. My friend kept disparaging the window displays saying she wouldnt want anything from them and if they didnt have price tags on them they were too expensive. I just said well they may not be practical clothes but they are creative. (I try to look for the good in everything)

I wanted to dare her to go into one of those stores and try something on. I said you dont have to buy it, just try it on. Just for fun

Its like going to a car yard and asking to test drive a ferrari, why not? You dont have to buy it. Otherwise, when will you ever get to drive one? lol

Well everybody gotta have hobbies. Your friend's hobby is disparaging window displays.

Your hobby is apparently disparaging friends. With all the friends you have that annoy you (and you have mentioned many annoyances with many, many friends) I gotta wonder why you keep all those people as friends.

BTW I fished some books out of the free books box on the side of the road and the withdrawn shelf on the library

They were free...! But usually people dont ask me how much the books cost or compliment me for reading them.

I think its more clothes and jewellery that people have issues with over how much they cost. Though I wonder what my friend would say if I said I like your WWJD bracelet it goes with your soul.
