sorry just joining in

I dont understand the whole Vietnam US thing whether they were trying to take over the country or what

as wasnt born then, even today, the Nzers who went to war there do NOT want to talk about it, like they are ashamed about the whole thing

But a friend of mine did go there on a trip
I asked if she went to the orphanage that Christina Noble founded, she said, she went past but it was not open or she couldnt get in

I just remember a movie was made after shed written the book, about how there were so many orphans and nobody to care for them...now a lot of these young children would have grown up, finding ways to fend for themselves, and also, hoping to learn English

because if you can communicate, you wont be misunderstood.

Room to Read apparently opened a lot of libraries and schools there, it was one of the first countries after Nepal that desperately needed books, teachers and schools for their children but not just in elnglish but also, in their own langauge

Ken Burns' 'The Vietnam War' may be available in your country on Netflix.

It is ten episodes long, but three episodes is possibly all it would
take for you to understand how and why America got involved.

I would say the extremely short but incomprehensible answer is "Because Australia and UK asked us to"

Which made the migration to Canada for draft dodgers even more head scratching.

And the frustration of having the conflict micro managed by DC as well as the absolute dictatorial fashion our Government was acting with at the time really made it bad.

Then you had the same people who opposed our entrance into WWII doing the same thing with Vietnam and Korea conflicts. (My grandmother opposed us getting involved in WWII)

All the while PRC was goading both Russia and the US into destroying each other. (So they could be pre-eminent nation)

It was largely a knee jerk reaction against the spread of communism, the fear of which was at an all-time high back then. Hồ Chí Minh pleaded with the US to help Vietnam gain their independence, to be free of colonialism following the second world war, when everyone was trumpeting the victory of the free world, but America turned a blind eye and deaf ear to his, and their, plight. His only recourse was to turn to China and Russia in order to oust the French and Japanese once and for all.

Yeah....Truman was an idiot president for sure...I don't know how he got elected in the first place. When people talk about the low intelligence of the current president I always think about Truman's being elected as the worst failure we ever had as a president. He fired McArthur because of the difference in opinion...McArthur was right as history proved. And the Black Wall monument wouldn't exist if Truman's ego didn't get the better of him in that one.

I don't know much about him, really, but wiki says he proposed Congress pass comprehensive civil rights legislation, which, when they refused, he ended racial discrimination in federal civilian and military affairs via Executive Orders.

The fallout from cover-ups during the Vietnam war have been extensively dramatized in quite a few very good movies. But what a tangled web! They should have just listened to McNamara ;):D Although he played a role in escalating their involvement in the war, it was more from a strategical and analytical point of view, since he was opposed to committing American troops (putting "boots on the ground"), especially after a task force he manned to study the war, which later became the leaked Pentagon Papers at the heart of the Watergate scandal. There are quite a few good movies about Nixon also :D And an excellent 4 part docu-series on Bobby :) <= it's on Netflix ;)

I do hope you will stay, there are no accidents in this world, He knows the end from the beginning and knew at the Creation we would be sharing here right now.
Sorry, but I didn't see this until now.

I have no idea what I'll do.

I have a pretty good idea what God wants me to do as far as personal sanctification is concerned, but very little direction beyond that at the moment.

I used to hear more clearly from the Lord in the past than I presently am, but, then again, a lot of that came in the form of personal correction.

Anyhow, I hate doing secular work.

It's really of no eternal value whatsoever unless it provides some sort of ministry opportunity.

Where I work now, I'm pretty much in solitary confinement all day long (for real). so I'm hoping and praying that God opens some sort of door for me elsewhere.

Ok...the problems of Korea and Vietnam stemmed from during Truman's presidency and his absolute failures in foreign policy. Domestic policy was somewhat better and he did have some sense of morality...but that in no way solved the issues surrounding the post WWII world that were immense.

Most governments were weakened by that war. Most were still reeling when the Korean and Vietnam conflicts broke out. And some of those governments turned into opportunistic thugs to try and strengthen themselves. Using propaganda and communism to make them align with them...promising the few positions of wealth and power. The people? Simply pawns to be expended at any inconvenience.

That was what Truman ignored and McArthur was trying to explain to the people...when Truman fired him for "defying policy".
Eventually, since McArthur got fired, diplomacy fell completely apart and the whole Asian continent fell into chaos. Which Russia tried to control and have a proxy war with America....with PRC goading both sides at the same time.

Nixon tried to pick back up diplomacy with PRC and negotiate with them...but his own scandals caught up with him.

Nixon was a brute of a man...much like Trump. Good ideas for how to run the nation but trusted the wrong people in sensitive situations which got him in a lot of trouble. And then he lied and covered up which got him in even more trouble.

Johnson was a schlub...just a pig of a man who was never really cut out for the white house.

If there was ever a time we were closer to Him than now, we are backslidden, somehow we stopped growing with His as He continually moves forward.

well. thanks might look it up (the netflix)
but I have a historical fiction on my tbr shelf called the Leonard Girls about it from nz perspective
that may shed some light

I know it was conflict over ideology and colonialism and communism and nationalism but not sure how it all started

I recall seeing a movie called Indochine in high school for French class but it just went over my head..it was set in Vietnam
I only recently saw a few years ago Robin Williams Good Morning Vietnam movie.

so..maybe I will come to an understanding at some stage...I have only just come to grips with the land wars in my own country that I didnt learn about in school. so am coming to my own conclusions about those...

anyway
at heart I am a peacemaker and dont agree with any carnal war
the battle is the Lords and its spiritual ...

Im not sure that you really need to fight a war to gain independence...you could just declare it couldnt you.
its more, if you want your independence youd need moral or vocal support not a bullying army...

as far as I understand. stand your ground and resist the enemy, dont fight them

I would agree that that is oftentimes the case, but I honestly don't think that that's the case with me.

For example, I used to receive some really powerful visions from the Lord. However, they mostly came in the form of personal correction, and I repented accordingly. Nowadays, God just needs to glance at me to get my attention, so that, I believe, is part of the reason for the change.

Anyhow, I definitely haven't stopped growing. Of this, I'm beyond certain.

Good to hear.
No matter where we are, He can and will use anyway, anyone, anytime, anywhere, to grow us and advance His kingdom and plan to redeem His creation to Him.
