I saw you in church and I shook your hand.
I told you how eternity is going to be grand.
I never saw the heartache that your eyes pleaded:
Won't you just love me in the way that is needed?

I saw you broken down on the side of the road.
I gave you a ride as your car was towed.
Of your financial situation I never inquired,
And I never loved you in the way you required.

I didn't see you in church so I called on the phone.
I told you it's not good to be all alone.
I never considered visiting as I hung up undaunted,
And I never loved you in the way that you wanted.

Love is not Love just because you show care.
Love becomes love when you're succinctly aware
That you cannot love according to generic creeds.
Love becomes love when it actually meets others needs.

This is so good! Echo of scriptures? Book of James? I need to do and not say just like your poem says!

I appreciate the kind words. I'm not sure what scriptures contributed to this particular poem but James 1 would no doubt have been included.
