I think being direct can be a good thing rather than pretending and lying.

But then I also have feedback and survey forms ppl can write in anonymously if they like or dont like something. This is called a suggestions box. But if nobody has any ideas or suggestions then they'll just get nothing.

Also if nobody dares to have any ideas because their boss is just going to bite their head off for thinking of ways to improve things or coming up with solutions, then what is the point in asking for help from your workers. I think people have to be humble enought to admit when something isnt being addressed or working and that they are not perfect or in control all the time.

from what Ive observed of bosses is that the perception from workers is they sit in the corner of their office on their butt and dont do any real work - and dont bother to talk to their workers or train them properly lol

How many bosses have you had?

Have you ever been in a supervisory position/ a boss to someone else?

Managers have objectives they must meet.

Managers are the ones who get in trouble when things go wrong.

Managers have a lot of facts and figures to keep track of.

What, you thought they were just naturally ill tempered? They seem cranky because they have a lot of stress.

I would pay cash, no question, up-front, to see you deal with being a manager. In fact I'd place bets on how long it took for you to quit in disgust.

Staff turnover is high in places that cant retain workers because of the way they are treated a lot of the time.

The most useful thing I learned when I did my degree was management skills. However many in charge dont have this or much experience in that area. You also need people skills in many jobs.

Uh... You just contradicted yourself.

You learned management skills... But you think managers sit on their butts in their offices and don't do any real work?

You learned management skills, but they never mentioned all the stuff that keeps the manager in the office, sitting on his butt? They never said anything at all about paperwork?

If you learned management skills, how can you think they are not doing any real work?

is like being a pastor for those who dont know

Pastoral care is essential, but many bosses tend to view workers as 'human resources' i.e robots that happen to be pesky humans and have things unfortunate things like feelings.

This has been foreseen. In fact I predicted it back at post #41. I have a chat room full of witnesses to confirm my prediction.

Squeaky wheels get greased and then replaced....

And the tallest nail gets pounded.

Being in management is a difficult job...making numbers work, production schedules met, and always problems coming up needing solutions but no money available to solve those problems.

Then not only is management expected to keep the work flowing they are expected to improve things at the same time with greater efficiencies and improved productivity.

Then the curveball of new technologies and new software systems.

Also at the same time you need to provide for employees improvement plans....so your team supporting you can grow professionally with added skills that are marketable in the workforce. On one hand you are helping them for when they want to quit and move off elsewhere...but if done successfully you will be in charge of the "Cool Kids Club" and people will want to be a part if your team over and above the other teams at your place of business. They will work harder to remain one of your team.

A regular employee works their 8 hours and goes home....management works non-stop way past normal hours strategizing their department and trying to gain resources for their department.

Yeah, that.

A lot of managers have a lot to deal with, and they just don't have the time to deal with an employee getting in their face. Especially if they have reason to believe the employee will be getting in their face on a regular basis.

Lol Thats a line that a lot of teachers say. And it doesnt change whether the class is junior or senior level.
My happiness or unhappiness doesnt affect being with Christ at the end of my time.

My boss is retiring at the end of the year, the new upcoming boss is just throwing her weight around lol

I decided to take a leaf out of her book and just say I was not keen on some of her new ideas for the library which she does not work in everyday. she was a bit non plussed that I dared to tell her off lol.

Some people dont like it when you talk to them as an equal!
We have this one lady where I work that reminds me a lot of you. She has definite ideas about how things should be done and will not tolerate any argument about the matter. One would think she is a manager herself. Not only does she insist on doing things her way, but she insists other people should also do things her way.

She never refuses to do anything that is part of the official requirements. The things she insists on are always additions to the official requirements, never subtractions. So the managers just humor her. She is fortunate that we have pretty decent, understanding managers.

If something happened to our current managers and we got new managers, I can easily imagine her being insistent on one of the things she believes should be done her way, and the new manager firing her on the spot for being dogmatic about something that is unnecessary.

Do you tell everyone this when you are not happy?!

I have noticed my boss and some people will do this, like they want you to know right away. Is this good or bad? I supoose its honest and direct.

Whereas, if I am not happy I dont really tell everyone, I just kind of go to my room and cry.
Or maybe put on a rage song and yell at the top of my lungs (grunge music was good for this)

I think its because I dont really want to hurt anyone with my being unhappy, or make people think its all their fault. Then my unhappiness doesnt last for too long (after praying) cos being a misery guts isnt that fun to be around

Of course, one cant be happy ALL the time and you cant please everyone. Some people cope by drinking ('happy hour') but I never did that. Children just get happy meals from McDonalds. You can also go to a 'happy place' either in your mind or create one, and if Im not happy I kind of tend to change things around till I am happy. But I dont really tell other people that Im not happy cos what can they really do?

Doctors now can say 'take a chill pill' and actually prescribe anti-depressants. Or are their benefits to comiseration...like if someone tells you they are unhappy do you chime in and say yep life is pretty awful..!
I think it depends on the intention of the person who says, "I am not happy".

It's good for peeps to know if they are feeling unhappy. Lots of times people mis-associate, or mis-direct their unhappiness. They're have bad feelings... and something unrelated comes along, and then sometimes peeps think that new thing is the reason they are not happy. So, it's good to regulate your feelings and know what's really making you unhappy, if you can.

Along those lines... if someone tells you they are not happy, you can know ahead of time why they are reacting to you they why they are. Some peeps can't just drop their unhappiness when they are dealing with you. They still have a responsibility to not wrong you while they are unhappy, but we can't expect them to be tip-top.

Going back to intentions... if the person announcing they are unhappy are saying this with the intention of posing an excuse to behave badly toward you, or take advantage of you, then it's not a good thing.

Someone whos had enough and reaching retirement age, shouldnt hang on for longer than they need to. They have so much to look forward to if they had played their cards right and enjoy their 'golden years'

some retired people find they are busier yet more fulfilled to when they were working.

Anyway, we will give her a decent send off. Its not easy being a boss, especially for a woman. Some feel they have to act like men to do the job. But I think she had many good qualities and was not usually a grumpy person as people can get when they are older. I think she let stress get to her.

Its true if you have a vocation you do what you love and spend all your time doing it, you not tied to time but you need to place limits on your time...spent an if you not but aspire to be those higher up and just treating it like a fixed hour job will not be happy their subordinates are thinking outside the box. But you need a healthy succession in a role or you are not handing it over properly, but leaving a mess for someone else to clean up

hmm well

today is the day

we'll see if she goes and I go..I will appeal to her better nature and say well, when you retire you can do your garden

and besides I will always have my garden anyway. I will nominate one of the children to be the head librarian instead and they will have a field day running the library and making it into a hide and seek playground.

They may banish the new Principal when they find out shes the one that let me go

well

she found someone on the staff for me to train hands on so the library would keep ticking over and not be left in a total mess.

That is what I asked for anyway if they couldnt keep me on for next year. I just didnt want anyone be put in the position of having my job dumped on them when they already have so much else to do. Then not knowing or having a clue how to do it.

Hopefully have done the right thing as its very difficult atm. plus nearing end of year.
