I know what you mean. I have the same feeling from time to time.
Be encouraged by what the Word of God says about those who love others.
You might not yet see the rewards for doing good here, but you will see it one day.
Also I think it is important for you to know this:
God loves you very much!

I also wish to see what really is the purpose of all this, the only problem is, that we will see the end solution at the very end.
And doing love without receiving something in return is very hard... because you wish to gain honor and glory and praise from it. But this world will slap you another time in the face. Jesus must have felt much of the same.
If you feel really empty than sometimes, to be really practical for you, listening to some christian music helps. Praising God and worshipping Him for what He does. Start with the simple things around you. The good that is given you! If you find it hard to enjoy this, just give it some time and pray over it.
And offcourse read the Bible if you dont read it already and be in prayer.
Love yourself as much as you love other people. So love yourself is totally allowed. But in righteouss proportions. So if you love other people more than you love yourself it has not the right balance. So maybe a thing for you to think about?
As for what i experience as my purpose:
To honor God
&
To live with God
I pray for you that you will find direction and truth and that you will reach your purpose in full harmony as your heart desires.
