As a non Christian, 4 years ago I took an illegal drug, and it made me feel really joyful at the time..........but afterwards I blacked out of conciousness, and was very sick!
On becoming a Christian, I read "in God's presence is FULLNESS of joy", so I said to myself I do not want to settle for less joy from God, than I experienced on an illegal drug!!!
And there have been times, not always, when I've felt God's joy, and presence lifting me so much, I have laughed and cried at the same time, feeling overwhelmed in His presence! Drugs and alcohol and sin brought some fading counterfeit joy, and death, but God brings LIFE!!!!!!
So whilst I haven't felt this joy always, I want to encourage you...........no drug, no alcohol, sex or anything can promise fullness of joy, but God alone...............and just because we might not have experienced fullness of joy at all times, doesn't mean His word changes, and that we can't press on seeking God for His fruit............!
