Today is May 4th 2014. 44 years ago, ere long ago before I was born United States armed forces opened fire on peaceful protestors at Kent State University. This is a big event and date for people in Ohio, specifically NorthEast Ohio where I live, so I figured I'd share some info on the event and commemorate the day of remembrance with this topic.

I understand not many people outside Ohio or America may be aware of this dark stain on American History, however it is a very important event and is very useful to know if you wish to understand some more about American History and Ohio History and Culture more specifically. We are taught in Ohio public school about this event each year and this event should never be forgotten.

Here is a wikipedia article which gives some pretty good information on the Kent State Massacre:
Kent State shootings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If anyone is familiar with the old time rock n roll of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, here is a song they made many years ago memorializing the massacre, and it is popularly sung and listened to today for remembrance of the event.:

I am interested in any comments on the event, or even seeing as we got many older folks on this site, maybe even just a commentary of the those times for sake of perspective. I have always been interested in the event because I see many parallels to it and my time era. Reminds me of that old Biblical saying "nothing is new under the sun."

It's great that our youth recognizes the past......those days were confusing...I was only 12 when this happened...
But it was horrific and talked about for years.....btw. csn&y. rocked....
They talked about it at school ....but not in detail....guess they thought it would make the gov. Look bad..
they also lead us to believe the students were at fault and were bad people....can you believe that.....
Back then music was for a cause....many groups were socially conscious....alot of the old school groups
stood for the rights of others..... todays music is more about the money fame and sin.....
Thanks for remembering ........sad thing is....this is the first ive heard about it since then........

Yes indeed I am familiar with how the government propaganda attempted to spin the situation (and as the CSNY song shows, they failed.) I am not too sure about all public schools, but I know for mine they'd teach us about Kent State Massacre every year especially with an anti-government take on this (for one because we are Ohioans, and for two because almost all my teachers that taught social studies were of course kids during when the event happened.)

My Sociology/Psychology teacher, and also personal friend, did a few weeks long study of Kent State Massacre. He did a very good job too as he is a pretty intellectual guy showing us all the different angles from pro-government supporters, protestor point of view, and even just objective people on the side, the media, and analyzing the ideas of power, protest, culture, etc.

This reminds me, my teacher, Mr. Reese, was actually referenced on NPR when they made Kent State a historic site in 2010

Here is the link to the transcript (and also audio is available on the page): Teaching Kent State, 40 Years Later : NPR

Farily decent story on the event, though the article deals moreso with the way it is taught to my generation today. Heh kinda wierd me hearing my old teacher's voice on NPR, but they couldn't have picked a better person for the topic because he knows more than anyone I know of on Kent State Massacre and has interviewed some of the survivors and done a lot of research on the subject indeed (and if I am not incorrect he is also a graduate of Kent, though I am not sure on this because its been so long since I talked to him.)
