Is it possible for someone to be saved and backslide for years before coming back to Christ ?

Yes; backsliding is rather different from apostasy, which means complete and final abandonment of one's former profession, which may be taken to prove that there was never true spiritual life in the first place. Whereas a backslider is a true believer who has been hindered in his or her walk. It is good to remember the precious promise of Romans 8.38-39.
