For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV)

How important is this statement for understanding the Atonement? what is so significant about this verse ?

hi Phil.
without the Righteousness of Christ as our garment, NOT ONE OF US WILL ENTER GOD'S PRESENCE.
our sin for His sinlessness, our unrighteousness for his Righteousness.

what an awesome God we have.
