Whatever day you believe to be the actual day of the crucifixion, today- Good Friday is the the day much of the Christian world commemorates the sacrifice Our Lord made to save us and reconcile us to himself.

May we ever thank The Lord!

Today is still a national holiday. Despite the increasing erosion of Christianity from public life, my neighbourhood is quiet. Most people are off work, the schools and banks are closed, most of the shops are closed. Most public services operate only Sunday hours if at all.

Perhaps the majority of people are watching telly and eating chocolate rabbits but everyone (Christian or otherwise) knows the significance of this day. It remains a witness to the sacrifice of Jesus. Not many today could claim they haven't heard of Jesus and his sacrifice.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Thank you Jesus

Just imagine if there was no truth, no Jesus,
no salvation ...
We would all have no hope
no escape from evil
no moral virtues
no testimonies to being born new and transformed lives
no miracles, healings and other blessings

We would all be living under terrible dictatorships and worshipping
political leaders
civilisation would be without moral progress
we would only ever know how to be carnal

1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ:
5 And hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed
abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ
died for the ungodly.

8 But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were
yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Psalm 22 (NIV)

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my cries of anguish?
2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, but I find no rest.

3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the one Israel praises.
4 In you our ancestors put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried out and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by everyone, despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
“let the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
since he delights in him.”

9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
10 From birth I was cast on you;
from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

11 Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions that tear their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted within me.
15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.

16 Dogs surround me,
a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones;
people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.

To a Christian, the first thought should be that every Friday is Good Friday since Jesus died to save us, every Sunday is Easter Passover since Jesus rose from the grave on a Sunday morning- because He was resurrected we can share in His resurrection, and everyday is Christmas since we give to God by giving to others- showing God’s love because of the gift He gave us (grace by Christ’s blood).

We do not know specifically what month and day of the year these things took place. But it does not matter. A true Christian does not celebrate these things in their heart only once a year.

To a Christian, the second thought should be that every second of every heartbeating moment should be Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas all in one.

Ah, it's not a national holiday in the States; however, because so many suddenly become Catholic at noon, (Catholics are supposed to take noon to 3 PM as a time of silence to pray and mourn at the death of Christ), most businesses give half days.

Here's a poem I found on The Gospel Coalition website. I have no idea who or what TGC is, but remember hearing of a sermon titled, "It's Friday, but Sunday is Coming." (Not a big fan of the preacher who gave the sermon, so not telling who he is. lol) I thought the poem is appropriate for this thread.

It’s Friday
Jesus is praying
Peter’s a sleeping
Judas is betraying
But Sunday’s comin’

It’s Friday
Pilate’s struggling
The council is conspiring
The crowd is vilifying
They don’t even know
That Sunday’s comin’

It’s Friday
The disciples are running
Like sheep without a shepherd
Mary’s crying
Peter is denying
But they don’t know
That Sunday’s a comin’

It’s Friday
The Romans beat my Jesus
They robe him in scarlet
They crown him with thorns
But they don’t know
That Sunday’s comin’

It’s Friday
See Jesus walking to Calvary
His blood dripping
His body stumbling
And his spirit’s burdened
But you see, it’s only Friday
Sunday’s comin’

It’s Friday
The world’s winning
People are sinning
And evil’s grinning

It’s Friday
The soldiers nail my Savior’s hands
To the cross
They nail my Savior’s feet
To the cross
And then they raise him up
Next to criminals

It’s Friday
But let me tell you something
Sunday’s comin’

It’s Friday
The disciples are questioning
What has happened to their King
And the Pharisees are celebrating
That their scheming
Has been achieved
But they don’t know
It’s only Friday
Sunday’s comin’

It’s Friday
He’s hanging on the cross
Feeling forsaken by his Father
Left alone and dying
Can nobody save him?
Ooooh
It’s Friday
But Sunday’s comin’

It’s Friday
The earth trembles
The sky grows dark
My King yields his spirit

It’s Friday
Hope is lost
Death has won
Sin has conquered
and Satan’s just a laughin’

It’s Friday
Jesus is buried
A soldier stands guard
And a rock is rolled into place

But it’s Friday
It is only Friday
Sunday is a comin’!

The greatest crime ever committed. The murder of Christ by crucifixion on Calvary.

For me He died. It was my sin for which He made atonement.

For me He suffered. For me He was beaten. For me He wore a crown of thorns. For me He left heavens glory.

The scene was so horrific all of heaven reeled in shock. How could the Lamb of God give Himself for so many unworthy creatures?

Yet He rejoiced to save those who would call upon Him to be saved. God Who created the universe rejoiced when I came to know Christ as my Savior.

He took my place in condemnation, bore my shame. His love for me I cannot begin to comprehend.

Glory, glory to God. The best is yet to come.

Can you see Jesus on the cross nails piercing His hands and feet with a crown of thorns beaten onto His brow and He looks out into eternity future and rejoices? Such anguish and such woe yet He sees joy beyond our comprehension.

Contemplation of the great drama of the cross has the effect of placing many of our petty arguments over doctrine into a different perspective.

The Wintershall Passion play has become something of a Good Friday tradition in Trafalgar Square (Central London)in recent years. It rained most of the day this year but the performance went ahead.

This clip is from a previous year, without the rain.

I would say a growing number of people do not know the significance or meaning of Easter those who do are now in the minority. My ten year old son was the only child in a class of 26 knew what Easter is about, that Good Friday commentates the Lord Jesus Christ!s death and that Christians celebrate Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday. We live near Birmingham.
