Huawei exec's arrest opens a new front in the US-China trade war

The arrest of a top executive at Chinese tech giant Huawei at the request of the US government has angered Beijing, alarmed investors and raised new doubts about the fragile truce that the leaders of the world's top two economies reached just days ago.

Canadian authorities said late Wednesday that Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, had been arrested in Vancouver and that the United States is seeking her extradition.

The US and Canadian governments haven't specified what charges Meng faces, but her arrest follows reports this year that the US Justice Department was investigating whether Huawei violated American sanctions on Iran.

Full stink:

Bout time the West woke up to China's ambitions.

From the Beeb:

China has demanded that Canada release the arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou or face consequences.

Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng had summoned the Canadian ambassador and lodged a "strong protest", a statement said.

The ministry described Ms Meng's arrest as "extremely nasty".

Ms Meng, Huawei's chief financial officer and daughter of the firm's founder, is accused of breaking US sanctions on Iran.

She was held in Vancouver last Saturday and faces extradition to the US, where she could be jailed for up to 30 years if found guilty.

China insists that she has not violated any laws.

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou granted bail, will live in Vancouver under electronic surveillance

A British Columbia Supreme Court judge ordered that the Chinese telecom executive may be released under a number of conditions, including that she wear an ankle bracelet, surrender her passports, stay in Vancouver and its suburbs and confine herself to one of her two Vancouver homes from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m..

Meng was released on $10 million bail — $7 million in cash and $3 million in sureties.

Applause was heard in the courtroom’s public gallery after Justice William Ehrcke read his decision.

Of course this bail happened after the Chinese arrested a former Canadian Diplomat rolleye.gif in a tit for tat.
