they are -very- much alike...

i think the only reason you insist on making a distinction and regarding hypnosis as evil is because you have been influenced by the popular x-files type depiction of hypnosis in the media...you are looking at it with pop culture preconceptions instead of examining it objectively...
I think, I think, I think... It is like anybody who opposes or has any other opinion than what you think and what you feel, are wrong. So you give them a thumbs down or a caution marker and then diss on their response to attempt to discredit that person. It is nearly impossible to learn or see anything new when you think that you already know it all....

General anesthesia is a state of unconciousness. The popular misconception is that a person is unconscious during hypnosis. This has been proven wrong by contemporary research. Patients are fully awake, and focused, while peripheral awareness is decreased.

How could an unconscious person respond to suggestions? With an increased response even?...Simple, they can't.

Want to see mass hypnotism, just turn on your TV to the average 'charismatic' tv preacher. Much of that 'holy spirit' is actually trance state or hypnotism. Benny Hinn is a great example of it.

Yeah...this is a bit off the topic..bit waht about those ''feel good'' messages.. you know those preachers that do a lot of hollerin but aint really sayin nothin,,,,''WHOOO!!!! AINT GOD GOD!!!!! Dont shout at me.. teach me something

I personally think hypnotism is not cool. A majority of the people who are involved in hypnotism are involved in the occult...

During my psychology class in high school, a hypnotist was brought in. It was one of the more uncomfortable things I've ever seen.

Are you serious right now?! Before you say hypnosis has anything to do with demons you should seriously take a psychology class! All hypnotists do is act as your sobconsious mind. They cannot make you do anything you do not want to do at all. Actually last night I just saw one and one of the participants half woke up and only listened to the hypnotist and when the hypnotist tried to make the guy fall asleep he did, but then woke right back up, laughed, and walked back into the crowd.
One more thing: before you say that being hypnotized is being under the influence of demons then you must be just as possesed as I am; the average person goes under a form of hypnosis 64 times a day. Ever driven on a highway then suddenly thought to yourself "where did those last five miles go" or in a classroom "i just missed everything the teacher just said for the last ten minutes, how am i going to answer her question?" Before you bash something, please please research it first.

yeah kind of like the videos where people pushed the pain and die button because they had order to do it.

who will you be a slave to?

yes hypnotism and many other techniques of the world plays upon inherent sinfulness of men, but God tells us this:

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

However I don't believe its necessarily demons but more the sinful flesh of a person who has strongholds in their mind that war against God and that they have not brought their thoughts into captivity but have allowed their sinful thoughts to take them captive instead.

Is it a sin to be hypnotized?

I would not go that far but it is wrong to willingly give control of your body to anyone but GOD and if your will is strong and you are grounded in Christ, you will not be able to be swayed or hypnotized by any man.

It is the spiritually immature that are blown by the wind and the doctrines of men, allowing themselves to be hypnotized by tv preachers or psychologist.

Ephesians 4:13-15
New King James Version (NKJV)
13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

is it the self hypnosis that heals back pain or God's Holy Spirit?
