I have an old tree that needs water or it will die. I got a watering spike (a 3 foot long hollow tube that you attach to a garden hose and drive into the ground). At first, any trickle of water I tried to put thru it just rose to surface around the spike. Now it doesn't matter how much water I flow, it all disappears into the ground. Am I creating a sink hole?

Have you tried calling your county extension agent in your area?

The county extension office has at least one expert, sometimes more, in soil, gardening etc. and my experience with these offices has always been a positive one.

Plus it is possible if they cannot answer your question, they can direct you to someone who can.

What kind of tree is it, what type of soil is it in? Why do you think it needs water?

Throw the watering spike in next weeks trash. Place a garden hose (turned on trickle) at least 10-15 feet from the base of the tree. Move it every 15 minutes around the tree until the ground is soaked. Repeat this until the ground is well soaked. Do this at least once a week for a month. Trees get water from the smaller roots that grow as far away as 50 feet or more from the base near the top of the ground. If your tree starts to bud water ballons on the branches you've over watered.

There's a Crepe Myrtrl, and some bottlebrushes. They're old and weak, we recently lost an 85 year old Walnut, and the Crepe Myrtle is prone to a fungus when it struggles. It drops leaves mid June, if I water it it perks back up but dies off as soon at it dries again. And I had an arborist (a real one) look at them and the spike is what she recommended. 3 equally spaced holes around the drip line. And I run it at a slow drip, maybe <1/2 gallon per hour. But I can crank it up, pretty high sometimes, and it doesn't backflow up the holes like it did at first. And I'm wondering just what kind of hole in the ground takes that kind of water in.
