I just read more about Secretary of State Seward, whose full name is William H. Seward. He strongly opposed slavery, favored immigrants and Catholics, and opposed Britain and France intervening in the Civil war, keeping them from gaining Independence over the southern Confederate states which preserved America and he also survived being targeted, and lead the purchase of Alaska from Russia.
