"I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth." Psalm 34:1

Shall all our devotional exercises consist in asking and receiving? Shall we be always thinking of our wants, and never of the benefits we receive? Shall we be recipients of His mercies, and never express our gratitude to God, never praise Him for what He has done for us? We do not pray any too much, but we are too sparing of giving thanks. If the loving kindness of God called forth more thanksgiving and praise, we would have far more power in prayer. We would abound more and more in the love of God, and have more bestowed to praise Him for. You who complain that God does not hear your prayers, change the present order, and mingle praise with your petitions. When you consider His goodness and mercies, you will find that He will consider your wants.

Pray, pray earnestly and without ceasing, but do not forget to praise. It becomes every child of God to vindicate His character. You can magnify the Lord; you can show the power of sustaining grace. There are multitudes who do not appreciate the great love of God nor the divine compassion of Jesus. Thousands even regard with disdain the matchless grace shown in the plan of redemption. All who are partakers of this great salvation are not clear in this matter. They do not cultivate grateful hearts.

But the theme of redemption is one that the angels desire to look into; it will be the science and the song of the ransomed throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity. Is it not worthy of careful thought and study now? Should we not praise God with heart and soul and voice for His "wonderful works to the children of men?"---Testimonies, vol 5, pages 317, 318.

Asking and receiving is where the praise comes from.

When you receive you can't help but feel grateful. When you feel grateful you naturally express it.

Or you can hold up a model of what you think christians should be and then copy that... Shame them into it. If that doesn't work then there's always fear and condemnation...

I think true praise comes from a heart of trust, even in the most adverse of circumstances we trustingly express praise, not so much for the trouble itself, but for what it brings, if we remain patient and trust that Yahweh has intentions of good for us then the awful circumstance in which we find ourselves works together for our good, (rom. 8:28) Job best expressed this here: Job 2:10 seems praise is an act of trust and a love of the most pure kind, when we praise Him, he inhabits this praise, psalm 22:3, if you really want to abide with Him then this is how we need to be: isa. 57:15 you see he seeks such who worship in Spirit AND truth, not only Spirit, and not only truth, but both, praise is an outward expression of the limitless love expressed in the lives of each believer whos trust and devotion pours out of a grateful and trusting heart, each of us were called out of a dark and dying world, when we answered this call we embarked on the hardest journey ever undertaken, however He has trod this path before us and knows the way, and is acutely aware of each tear, each cry of pain, and seeks only to deliver, elevate and restore each one of us to His similitude in character, we are made in His image, AND likeness, and although the weight of sin and its terrible effect is heavy in the earth, His awesome power sustains each one of us, and when we reach to the source of this infinite power, we too can do ALL things and reach the very potential He sees in all of us, so just praise him most when it seems the hardest, and hold fast when you seem to slip the most, and remember He already is there and knows what each trial can bring if we trust and lean on Him , (prov. 3:5-6) shalom...
