Can a reborn Christian completely turn their way from Christ? Is it common? I ask the question cos I don't think it's possible to do so.

A Christian's faith may falter for a while due to trials but they won't leave Christ. If they apostatise they were probably never truly regenerated but were mere churchgoers. Genuine salvation is evidenced by fruit of repentance and perseverance.

The only reason I believe it is possible is due to this verse:

For it is impossible [to restore and bring again to repentance] those who have been once for all enlightened, who have consciously tasted the heavenly gift and have become sharers of the Holy Spirit,
And have felt how good the Word of God is and the mighty powers of the age and world to come,
If they then deviate from the faith and turn away from their allegiance—[it is impossible] to bring them back to repentance, for (because, while, as long as) they nail upon the cross the Son of God afresh [as far as they are concerned] and are holding [Him] up to contempt and shame and public disgrace.
For the soil which has drunk the rain that repeatedly falls upon it and produces vegetation useful to those for whose benefit it is cultivated partakes of a blessing from God.
But if [that same soil] persistently bears thorns and thistles, it is considered worthless and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned. Hebrews 6:4-8 AMP

Essentially, there are some that grow so angry at God or the people of God due to happenstance and circumstance and whatnot that they turn from Him completely, to the point that they actively pursue ungodliness with a fiery vengeance, to separate themselves so far from God that they can never return. They become reprobate, they harden their hearts and such to a degree that the reason they don't repent is they arrive at a place where they simply can't. What I mean by this, is that they are so angry, so drawn away, that even if they speak the words, "Please forgive me", the truth doesn't reach their heart and as we all know, Jesus looks upon the heart, not the surface and their main reason for speaking said words is merely in fear of judgement and hellfire, not genuine repentance of their sinful lives.

I believe this is the exception, rather than the rule, to those who belong to Christ. As others have said, we can backslide, slip up, fool around, mess up, etc. and that doesn't put us in this portion of Scripture. However, it is possible, which is why we should always look at our hearts and our lives and our love/commitment to Christ, so as to not blame Him and grow cold, distant and angry with our perfect Savior due to feelings and misunderstandings and the failings of man.

Its interesting myst, I know one guy (didnt know him that well myself but I heard it was a shock to people when he turned away) who was on fire and loved God. He completely turned away from Him, deliberately sort out a sinful lifestyle, rejected peoples pleas to return to God but then one night a few years later had a bike accident where he shouldve been dead, it seriously woke him up and totally turned back to God. Another instance happening right now is a woman has left her husband and five kids for another woman, shes kidnapped her kids a couple of times, dabbles in witchcraft now and outright rejects God. It seems like theres no hope for her but you want to believe she will wake up one day. So I wonder when you apply that scripture? I guess you just need to be led by the Holy Spirit ey.

Honestly, it is not my place to determine who will and won't be in Heaven. That is where the judgement of God, who is righteous and just, comes in. And I wouldn't dare to speculate who this verse applies to. Suffice it to say, they know who they are and we must be careful to not arrive there ourselves. :) All I can say with 100% authority is that it wouldn't be in Scripture if it wasn't true, so we know it to be possible for one to turn away to the point that they cannot return.

Yay!

Sometimes, I feel like I'm the only one who's read Hebrews. (The church I attend is real big on Eternal Security. It's the only doctrine they hold that I disagree with. I've spoken with my pastor about it, and he knows. I keep my mouth shut when he preaches it during services.)

Also Hebrews 10:26-29.
