I used to hate poetry
Every part, reading, writing, listening to it

And my literature teacher made it his goal to change that and so he put lyrics to a song in front of me and a poem in front of me (he knows I am in love with music) and told me to tell him which was which.
I guessed wrong, but it changed my view on poetry all together.

The title of this thread reminded me of that haha

Nice share. You had a great teacher. Maybe my mind was just too far, or the language of poetry seemed so then, but i started to appreciate a few again by college, when i discovered the songs in shakespeare's playes-). Not that it got me anywhere. An elective on poetry wasnt as interesting either, and if i hadnt come across those songs wc i let our teacher hear, for i think she only recited poems, never sang them...

First line of this hymn has trumpet, but it is actually called When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder.

Fleetwood Mac - Mission Bell

Say you love me
Say those three words and
I will give my love to you

My love is higher than a mission bell (how deep?)
Deeper than a wishing well (how strong?)
Stronger than a magic spell
My love, for you
It's wider than the widest sea (how long?)
Longer than a memory (How sweet?)
Sweeter than a honey tree
My love, uhmmm, for you

Give me your heart of gold
Your heavenly magic touch
To cherish have and hold
I need your love so much

Say you love me
Say those three words and
I will give my love to you

My love is warmer than a day in spring (how bright?)
Brighter than a diamond ring (how great?)
Greater than a mighty king
My love, for you
Is taller than the tallest tree (how soft?)
Softer than a summer breeze
Oh I ask you please
Give your love, your love
Sweet love to me

how high (ummm)
how deep (ummm)
how strong (ummm)
how wide (ummm)
how long (ummm)

Kate Bush - The Saxophone Song

You'll find me in a Berlin bar,
In a corner brooding.
You know that I go very quiet
When I'm listening to you.

There's something special indeed,
There's something special indeed.

In all the places where I've seen you shine, boy
There's something very real in how I feel, honey.
It's in me. It's in me,
And you know it's for real.
Tuning in on your saxophone.
Da-ba-da-ba-doo

The candle burning over your shoulder is throwing
Shadows from your saxophone, a surly lady in tremor.
The stars that climb from her bowels,
Those stars make towers on vowels.

You'll never see that you had all of me
You'll never see the poetry you've stirred in me
Of all the stars I've seen that shine so brightly
I've never known or felt in myself so rightly

It's in me, It's in me
And you know it's for real
Tuning in on your saxophone
Da-ba-da-ba-doo-oo-oo-oo-ooo

The Stone Poneys (feat Linda Ronstadt) - Different Drum (1967)

Written by Michael Nesmith of The Monkees fame

You and I travel to the beat of a different drum
Oh can't you tell by the way I run
Every time you make eyes at me
Wo-oh

You cry and moan and say it will work out
But honey child I've got my doubts
You can't see the forest for the trees

Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I am not in the market
For a boy who wants to love only me

Yes, and I ain't sayin' you ain't pretty
All I'm saying is I'm not ready
For any person place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

So good-bye I'll be leaving
I see no sense in this crying and grieving
We'll both live a lot longer
If you live without me

Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I am not in the market
For a boy who wants to love only me

Yes, and I ain't sayin' you ain't pretty
All I'm saying is I'm not ready
For any person place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

So good-bye I'll be leaving
I see no sense in this crying and grieving
We'll both live a lot longer
If you live without me

Rod Stewart & Ron Wood - Mandolin Wind (Live)

When the rain came I thought you'd leave
'Cause I knew how much you loved the sun
But you chose to stay, stay and keep me warm
Through the coldest winter I've ever known
If the mandolin wind couldn't change a thing
Then I know I love ya

Oh the snow fell without a break
Buffalo died in the frozen fields you know
Through the coldest winter in almost fourteen years
I couldn't believe you kept a smile
Now I can rest assured knowing that we've seen the worst
And I know I love you

Oh I never was good with romantic words
So the next few lines come really hard
Don't have much but what I've got is yours
Except of course my steel guitar
'Cause I know you don't play
But I'll teach you one day because I love you

[I recall the night we knelt and prayed
Noticing your face was thin and pale
I found it hard to hide my tears
I felt ashamed I felt I'd let you down
No mandolin wind couldn't change a thing
Couldn't change a thing no, no]

The coldest winter in almost fourteen years
Could never, never change your mind, yeah
And I love ya, yes indeed and I love ya
And I love ya, Lordy I love ya
And I love ya, Lordy I love ya
