This new class of drugs treats a rare type of blindness, but carries a hefty price tag.

Biotech offers $850,000 blindness treatment

Only a few thousand, most diagnosed, who have this type of blindness, will benefit from this single treatment drug. Cost of this treatment is around $425K per eye. The company does offer a rebate if the drug doesn't work.

Before everyone gets their panties bunched up, lets look at the economics of this.

Only a few thousand people will use this drug, so not many units will be sold.

Research, development, testing, and manufacturing all have a cost.

The government has many expensive regulations that must be navigated before this drug can go to market.

The drug maker has a very limited amount of time they can recoup their investment, before the patent expires.

Company owners, most who are middle class, are entitled to a profit for their investment.

That's about right.

Think they will tell us their profit margin?

If it's a publicly traded company, they are required to disclose that information. If not, it's none of our business.

Hard to put a price on being able to see. Insurance companies are certain to balk at paying for the drugs.

This is cutting edge science. If this drug treatment is used on only one eye of 1,000 people in the US, it will gross $425M. The treatment has possible applications in many inherited diseases.

I doubt that most of the people who will benefit from the treatment can afford $4,250 to pay for the treatment. Maybe someone will donate enough to make it available to anyone who will benefit from it, or our legislators will give up some of the ridiculous pork projects and create a fund for them to receive the treatment.
