Friends, Dear Cleante and Zossima and friends,
What does Romans 5:14 mean?
"Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come." (NKJV OSB). Who were those "who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam"? Did they sin according to some other transgression, other than Adam's, since the Bible says, "All have sinned"? The OSB says, "However, among both Jews and Gentiles, some kept the law of nature and the law of Moses on the basis of inner faith. Yet these still suffered death that reigned over humanity."
Perhaps it means that all people are mortal, whether they sin or not. What is clear is that I have sinned, and I need to seek God's mercy and forgiveness. Perhaps the Virgin Mary was one of those blessed ones who had not sinned after the likeness of the transgression of Adam. But I still don't believe that she was miraculously conceived. That is a Roman papal innovation, unknown in Church tradition. In Erie PA Scott R. Harrington
