I used to do these all the time on another forum I frequent. Basically, I'll post a few quotes and you all take some time to think about it and tell me what that quote means to you.

First quote:

"People are like dirt. They can either nourish you and help you grow as a person or they can stunt your growth and make you wilt and die."
- Plato

I have a thought. Why do you have a little girl holding a wand as your avatar?

Completely unrelated and causes me to fear for the direction my thread will probably go, but a question is a question...

Her name is Miyazaki Nodoka (last name first name). She is my favorite character in my favorite manga, called "Negima!" She's a librarian =D

Well, I'll try :p

A new flood is foretold by the world's weather specialists and they say that nothing can be done about it. In three days, the waters will wipe out the world.
The Dalai Lama appears on television and pleads with everybody to turn to Buddhism. That way, they will at least reach enlightenment.
The Pope goes on television and says that the world must accept Christianity in order to attain salvation.
The Chief Rabbi of Israel takes a slightly different approach: "We all have three days to learn how to live under water."

*bows* Thank you, thank you :p

A Texan is visiting Israel and feeling thirsty, he stops at a house along the road. "Can you give me a drink?" asks the Texan
"Of course," says the Israeli, and he invited the Texan to come in.
"What do you do?" asks the Texan.
"I raise chicken" says the Israeli.
"Really?" says the Texan. "I'm also a farmer. How much land do you have?"
"Well, out front it's 50 meters, as you can see, and in the back we have close to 100 meters of property. What about your place?"
"Well," says the Texan, "on my ranch, I have breakfast and get into the car, and I drive and drive and I don't reach the end of the ranch until dinnertime."
"Really," replies the Israeli. "I once had a car like that too."

Here is a couple quotes people use that are not in the bible

God helps those who help themselves.
Cleanliness is next to godliness.

Both are accurate, if I do say so myself.

Accurate according to man's wisdom but not according to God's wisdom. God is the defender of the weak and the helpless and for those who cannot help themselves. He is their advocate. And as far as cleanliness, Jesus said about the religeous leaders that they make outside clean the cup and the platter but inside they were corrupt and whitewashed tombs and ravening wolves.

okay a few things.

First, I just looked at your age and it said 18 and I thought "whoa. He really is 18 now." Kinda hadn't clicked yet that you are no longer 17. My little McGibby is all grown up. *tear*

Second, rabbi jokes are funny

C, I likie your quote. I guess the goal is to find dirt that will nourish you, and get rid of the dirt that will make you wilt and die. Of course, it's hard to know from the start what type of dirt people are, so make sure you always carry some miracle grow with you(which might either be your own good character and positive attitude and/or God supporting you) so that even in the place of bad dirt you can survive long enough until you find some good dirt once more.

4, this whole dirt thing totally reminds me of the Hasidic tradition Matthew introduced me to with the "I am but dirt and ashes." Yay for humility!

finally, if cleanliness is next to godliness I am a very ungodly person.

your original quote makes me think this. We chose soil based on what we want to grow. Arid, rocky soil grows different things than moist soil. Soil with lots of nitrogen grows different things than soil with lots of iron. And some soil just isn't good for anything. It's the same thing with people. If we want to be a certain way, we surround ourselves with certain people. Some people will nourish us and help us grow as people like good soil, some people aren't the right soil for our lives and will bring us down. Some people are bad soil period and will kill our growth as a person completely. Be careful of which group of friends (pot of soil) you hang out with (plant yourself in) because our friends influence us more than we can imagine, and we want friends who will influence us to do good, and Godly things (help us grow).

My 8th grade Science teacher, Mr. Swaney used to tell us, if you hang out with turds you're gonna start smelling like one! It's sort of the same concept.

My thought: Not real profound...not even memorable, IMO, though pretty true.

Here's one: If someone calls you a jackass, you can just ignore it. If FIVE people call you a jackass, you need to buy a saddle.

It says to me that Plato viewed people from a utilitarian point of view.

Turn the quote around...we should try to be the best dirt for other people (love them as ourselves).

What's in your soil?;)
