You can find the words "sympathy" and "compassion" in the Bible but not "empathy". Why? Because you can have feelings FOR another person but you can't have the feelings OF another person. Empathy is a made up concept pushed by the American Psychological Assoc. (A political activist group) that you lack empathy if you aren't for a centralized socialist government take over. You are lower on the evolution scale if you reject global warming, gay marriage, no religion, gun confiscation, Marxism, etc.

Empathy- "the ability to understand and share the feelings of another."

Romans 12:15 "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep."

The APA says empathy is a result of evolution. Mirror neurons in the brain can read the minds of other people and actually feel what another person is feeling. Like literally tasting the food of what another person is eating. Or like literally feeling the pain in your toe when someone else stubs their toe. Only certain more evolved humans have this ability.

You can't have the feelings "OF" another.

You can understand them and share them.
You can try to understand what someone is feeling but you can't have the feelings of someone else. The APA says with empathy that you are able to know the thoughts and intentions of another no matter how well they try to mask their thoughts. But the Bible says only a person's own spirit knows what is in that person's mind 1 Cor 2:11.

I think you are attempting to make more out of it than it is.

Maybe someone else will appreciate your position. I'll leave it to them.

I'm only relaying what APA says about empathy.

Empathy is the experience of understanding another person's condition from their perspective. You place yourself in their shoes and feel what they are feeling. Empathy is known to increase prosocial (helping) behaviors. While American culture might be socializing people into becoming more individualistic rather than empathic, research has uncovered the existence of "mirror neurons," which react to emotions expressed by others and then reproduce them.

But you can't do that any more than you can put yourself in someone's tongue and experience and taste the food they are eating.

Are you sure that their interpretation of that word Is correct,I looked In the dictionary and found the same thing post #3 said so then I would rather believe what the bible says over the APA.

The concept of empathy has been around for centuries. The word 'empathy' may not be in the bible but the concept is explained in many verses along with applications of it. I don't see at all how gay marriage and gun confiscation is even remotely connected to this term.

OP must be a fan of the Jesus is lord website. They think everything is evil too.
'I don't like/understand something so it must be evil' is not in the bible, either.

Even Bill Clinton felt our pain and he is not the most spiritual person based on the life he has led.

Is that site (or was it) run by David J. Stewart? Or someone like him?

Let's see... you think the APA is a political activist group, imply a connection between them and all sorts of heinous conspiracy stuff, and quote their definition? Perhaps you should start with a Bible and a dictionary, and ignore what the APA says about anything.

Next will you be quoting the APA's view on "hearing voices" and claiming most Christian are therefore insane?

Not me. The past President of the APA said they are a political activist group and having nothing to do with science.

Can you please provide a source for your information about APA and their statements on empathy?
