Sounds like a browser issue. Do you clear your cache on sign out?

When I first joined in 2014 I had spellcheck but after about a year it disappeared. Within the last 6 months it came back for some reason.

Yes, and I ran the virus check program. The spell check problem is only here so far. Chrome sometimes says the extension violates their rules or something code. Maybe it is not a PC spell checker.

spell check still does not work
Have you tried a different browser? I use Edge here, and spell checks works fine in it :)

I can see it is enabled in my browser settings.

edge://settings/?search=spell%20check

my computer only has windows 7 and edge would destroy it or make it a doorstop. I will try firefox.

I used Firefox with Win7 (and now Win10) and spellcheck works fine for me.

We understand your concern as you are unable to install Edge on your Windows 7 PC. source

In this scenario, we would suggest you to perform these steps to Install Edge.
  1. Click on the link to download Edge setup file depending on 32 Bit or 64 Bit, you want to install.
  2. Once the file is downloaded, turn off the internet on the PC.
  3. Run the setup file you have downloaded and install Edge.
  4. Once the installation completes, turn on the Internet and launch Edge.
32 Bit: microsoftedgeenterprisex86_ab717b8bec0b610a4440b299cff664a35e055973.cab

64 Bit: microsoftedgeenterprisex64_98925e810c87bdd76f59cacd82e10d64e53dbdb1.cab

Please refer Windows 7 segment under the section “Help for specific error codes”
in this article: Troubleshooting tips for installing and updating Microsoft Edge

If that fails? Check this out:

Right click on the installer before running it.
Go to properties.

Go to the compatibility tab.

tick the checkbox which says "run this program in compatibility mode for".

Below that checkbox, there are options to choose from.

Choose your windows version ( which is win 7 in your case)

Then click apply at the bottom, and then click ok to close the properties tab.

Now try running it.

If it still doesn't work, try running it as administrator, by right clicking, and run as admin.

If it still doesn't work, get back to this forum, we'll see what can be done.

Hope these steps help in some way,

Your friendly neighborhood Insider.

:)

chrome has a built-in spellcheck.

i would remove any add-ons or extensions that are spell-check related. there is probably a conflict between the built-in and your extension that is preventing either one from working correctly.

i don't have any spellcheck extensions; i use chrome; spellcheck works fine for me
i'm a fan of chrome. i like its features and how it works on my phone and laptop and shares history etc between the two. that's convenient.

  1. disable/remove your spellcheck extensions from chrome browser
  2. in any tab with an empty text field, like here on CC to write a reply, right click
  3. you should see 'spell check' in the right-click menu.
    1. make sure one of the 'use spellcheck' options is checked ((basic or enhanced))
    2. i think 'enhanced' also checks grammar?
