There is a 'profile' pic and an 'avatar'. The avatar is the pic that shows up in forums. The profile pic only shows on your profile, some people seem to confuse the two.
On the front main page there is a line of blue text. One says 'Avatar' and one says 'Photo'. The 'Photo' is for profile pic and the 'Avatar' is, obviously, for changing your avatar. That is a shorter way then going through settings, as listed above.
