Use any AT&T phone as a GoPhone?

I've been looking into getting a cell phone and I've noticed that with prepaids your choices are typically pretty limited. I was looking into Virgin Mobile, their service is pretty okay around where I am. I then realized though that AT&T has GoPhones which would be quite a bit better as far as service goes. However, options are limited even more so with AT&T than with Virgin Mobile when you are looking into what phone to buy.

Virgin Mobile is about to release the Iphone 4s, which I'm not a huge Iphone fan... but it's the best option really so far. Still though, with Virgin I'd likely go with the LG Optimus Elite and Iphone would be my second choice. AT&T is about to release the Samsung Galaxy S3, which I am super excited about... but it is for their contracts, not as a prepaid. :( They want you on contract so bad. lol AND, the Galaxy is super pricey off-contract. I mean geeze. lol

So basically, I'm asking this question because I want to be able to choose my phone more freely as well as have the best service possible.


Long story short: Can I use any unlocked AT&T phone, such as the newly arriving Samsung Galaxy S3, as a GoPhone just by switching out the sim card?

Not per se, but in theory, yes. As long as the phone is indeed unlocked, you can supposedly apply any sim card. Just make sure the phone you're going to use supports the same band/frequency is all.
