So, recently came across a discussion that we are living in a simulation like the Matrix. As far as I know, we aren't, but there are some seriously intelligent people that are saying, it's entirely possible. Just thought I start up a thread and see what people think.

Thoughts?

"Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are here (or are they?) to investigate if we're living in a simulation. We explore the ever-advancing computer power and how that impacts the simulation hypothesis. Chuck wonders if a simulation universe has anything to do with us not being able to travel at the speed of light. You'll learn about Bayesian statistics. Lastly, Neil tells us how he was ready to embrace the simulation hypothesis until he came across a certain idea that changed his mind".

In our freefall through this life, we may create simulations that are indistinguishable from reality...until we hit the ground. Then we will know the difference. And hit the ground we will. This ground is called death.

I would suggest researching both Musk and Tyson's faith, religion ect. first and then examine their ideas on existence.

A couple of quick philosophical principles:

1. If there is a new claim which has zero evidence, or which lacks the substantial evidence to overturn an existing claim... then the new claim simply has no grounding or warrant to overthrow the existing claim. It can be ignored.

In short, if some guy has a crazy idea without REAL & SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE to support it... you can just ignore him.

FYI, how much fame or money he has... is irrelevant.
: )

2. We all have reasonable and necessary beliefs called "foundational beliefs", or "properly basic beliefs"... and this includes the belief that the external world around you is real.

Foundational beliefs are beliefs which all humans have, which are at the foundation of other beliefs, so that there is no other belief, or explanation, preceding them. This means, that for some beliefs, no antecedent belief or explanation is required.

Foundational beliefs would include ideas like:
- I know I have a head.
- I know I'm standing here right now.
- I know I'm alive.

YOU HAVE, INHERENTLY, PROPER PHILOSOPHICAL WARRANT TO BELIEVE YOU EXIST... AND AlSO TO BELIEVE THE WORLD AROUND YOU IS REAL.

Philosophers consider this perfectly reasonable, and warranted.
This is really only argued as a "thought experiment"... nobody really believes they're in a matrix.
If anyone REALLY believed they were in a matrix, or that they didn't really exist.... they wouldn't bother doing ANY of the normal things they do each day.... like eat, or go to work.

CONCLUSION:
There is NO REASON, PHILOSOPHICALLY, TO TAKE ANY OF THIS SERIOUSLY, OR WORRY ABOUT IT.

Strange as it sounds though maybe there's hope after all,,,there's two guys who say their agnostic/atheist,,never prayed to any creator and all of a sudden they think maybe there is an creator somewhere who has created them in an simulation? It makes me wonder just who they think is on the other side of the simulation with their hands on the controls.

If we're in a simulation, it is a Living Simulation. The below Scripture would lend credit to this idea:

Isaiah 34:11-17 NIV - "The desert owl and screech owl will possess it; the great owl and the raven will nest there. God will stretch out over Edom the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of desolation. 12 Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom, all her princes will vanish away. 13 Thorns will overrun her citadels, nettles and brambles her strongholds. She will become a haunt for jackals, a home for owls. 14 Desert creatures will meet with hyenas, and wild goats will bleat to each other; there the night creatures will also lie down and find for themselves places of rest. 15 The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings; there also the falcons will gather, each with its mate. 16 Look in the scroll of the LORD and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together. 17 He allots their portions; his hand distributes them by measure. They will possess it forever and dwell there from generation to generation."

I find it amazing that no one talks about this incredible Scripture. There's nothing else like it in the entire Bible. I"ve quoted this passage many, many times (here) and virtually no one acknowledges it . . . especially those who claim to possess free will.

Anyway, if these passages above are True, then all things are under the control over the Lord. If all of these creatures and all of the events of their lives are controlled so that all of these things will happen, then how are we not living in an Actual, Living simulation?

Are we living in a pod being used like batteries, thinking that there is a life that we're living other than swimming in a pod filled with fluid? No . . . ridiculous. But the whole world really is in His Hands.
