[h=1]1 Chronicles 19:1-5 King James Version (KJV)[/h]19 Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
[SUP]2 [/SUP]And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
[SUP]3 [/SUP]But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?
[SUP]4 [/SUP]Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
[SUP]5 [/SUP]Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

[SUP]2 [/SUP]David said, “Nahash was kind to me. So I will be kind to Hanun son of Nahash.” Then David sent a group to comfort Hanun about the death of his father.
David’s men went to comfort Hanun in the country of Ammon. [SUP]3 [/SUP]But the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, “Don’t be fooled. David didn’t send these men to comfort you. They are not here to honor your dead father. David sent his men to spy on you and your land. He wants to destroy your country.” [SUP]4 [/SUP]So Hanun arrested David’s men. To shame them he cut off their beards and cut off their clothes at the hips. Then he sent them away.
[SUP]5 [/SUP]David’s men were too ashamed to go home. Some people came to David and told him what had happened to his men. So he sent messengers to meet them. He said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back. Then come home.”

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
1 It was very common for the eldest son to replace his father as king as long as they kept the kingdom. It was also common to attack the kingdom while the next king is starting because that is often times when it may be the weakest.
2 It was a very kind thing that David was doing, he was trying to make peace rather than have a feud. Making peace agreements were common but David was just trying to be a friend, he did send the people to make a peace agreement but sent them simply so they could help comfort him in his time of sadness.
3 These leaders were foolish, they truly did not know David or what he was doing and because of their foolishness this would problems, we need to be careful who we listen to and seek only Godly advice because any other leads us to trouble.
4 He made a mockery of David’s men, did not question them which would have been smart but just decided his men were right and left them to shame making a statement to David that he would not have wanted to make, sometimes we can make mistakes like this and we have to face up to the results but as Christians we should try to make things right.
5 The men were shamed this could have meant war these men would have thought of all this as they were going home so rather then being shamed they just did not go home, David most likely found them after had men search for them so he could hear from them, he has them stay in Jericho so they could avoid shame of going home, David perhaps would have told their family that they were listening to his command and would be home soon.
