[h=1]1 Kings 22:19-23New International Version (NIV)[/h]19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of theLord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. 20 And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’
“One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’
22 “‘By what means?’ the Lord asked.
“‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said.
“‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’
23 “So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.”

Can someone help me understand why God would send a lying spirit?? Thanks!!

In both the Old and New Testaments, God chooses the delusions of those who repeatedly refuse to listen to Him and such was the case here, I believe:

Isaiah chapter 66 verses 1 thru 4

Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
For all those things hath mine hand made, and those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

2 Thessalonians chapter 2 verses 11 and 12

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Why is the Old Testament so confusing? I'm constantly asking why???I guess you can compare the two.. delusion vs. Lying spirit. It just doesn't make sense why he would send a lying spirit...God's not a liar.

Think about the timelines in which the two Testaments were written. Job was probably written around Abraham's time (2000BC) and the last book of the Old Testament was written in roughly 400BC. That's a stretch of about 1,600 years of recording history. Prior to that, we have Genesis, Chapters 1-11, which covers approximately 2,000 years of history, beginning with Creation Week and ending with Abraham's introduction. In contrast, the New Testament was written in one lifetime (between 30AD-70AD).

Finally, Hebrew is more difficult to translate than Koine Greek and it contains a lot of clever and helpful wordplay that just doesn't make it into the English translations.

God isn't a liar, but He will ultimately give people up to their own desires if they repeatedly refuse to hearken unto Him.

My memory is failing me and I'm currently reading through 2nd Kings. What verses are you referring to, brother?

posts 2 & 5 are spot-on.

understanding the OT in conjunction with the NT, most definitely brings us a clearer understanding.

God is definitely not a liar, and He is not going to send the Holy Spirit and Truth to those that are
in 'total rebellion' - and even in the opposite side, He will send satan to do his job to bring people
to what ever stage He wants them.

these two verses are speaking of a man that is having an incestual relationship - he is brought back in
the faith, but the verses explain how this happens.

1COR.5:4-5.
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my Spirit, with the power
of our Lord Jesus Christ, deliver such a one unto satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may
be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

this is but one of the ways that Christ uses, the spirits, whether unto justice and judgment
or whether of justice unto salvation - which is the case in the above...

There are other accounts of the Lord commissioning an evil spirit to do His bidding in scripture. For example:

Judges chapter 9 verses 22 thru 24

When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

A more familiar example would be the following:

I Samuel chapter 16 verses 14 thru 16

But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

It's very Job-esque.
Yes, it is. In the book of Job, we twice see Satan appearing before the LORD with the sons of God or with the angels and we have every reason to believe that Satan still has that same exact type of access to God's throne today and that he will continue to have said access until the yet future fight between Satan and his angels and Michael and his angels takes place during which Michael and his angels will prevail and Satan will lose his access to the third heaven and the great tribulation will begin:

Revelation chapter 12 verses 7 thru 12

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

When Michael stands up, as prophesied in the book of Daniel, to do battle against Satan and his angels, the heavens will rejoice in that the accuser of our brethren will have been cast down from the same realm and unto this earth, but such will bring great woe upon the inhabiters of the earth and the sea because Satan will come down with great wrath, knowing that he has but a short time or 3 1/2 years. Yes, this event which will transpire in the spirit realm will trigger the great tribulation as prophesied:

Daniel chapter 12 verse 1

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Job 1:6
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Zechariah 3:1
And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

satan said, l will persuade him; (or prevail upon him) and God said "You will succeed in enticing him, Go and do it."

As it is written "
for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh."

and again.......
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Ephesians 4:9
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
