Dear brothers and sisters,

I´d like to discuss a matter I´ve wondering about for quite some time: the rock-opera "Jesus Christ Superstar".

Ok, first, I must say that I grew up hearing it, loving it very much, in fact, it´s the only opera I know completely from the beginning to the end. In my opinion, it´s the best musical work of the 20th century (please note, musical).

However, we can´t dissociate the music from the movie and...mainly, from the lyrics. Since I became a born again christian, I started to feel unease every time I heard it (in fact, even before that, I felt that sometimes). Therefore I decided to stop hearing it. Although it´s among my favorite musical works of all time, I can´t ignore all the lyrics. So, I decided to stop hearing it or see it!

Nevertheless, I´d like to know your opinion regarding it. What´s your view?

God bless you!

Promoted a human only Jesus, with 'weaknesses;...not God.
Humanism at it's best.

If you are feeling convicted to not listen to it. Then do what you feel is right for you.

I'm with Kefa. I think God is all over that film. But then, I sometimes see Jesus in the actions of hookers and drug dealers. (Uh.... NOT their professional work. LOL) But you gotta do what you feel is right for you.

Well, the movie is about Judas Iscariot´s perspective of Jesus, in the last days of His life. The willful anachronisms don´t bother me at all, however, although it follows the Bible events (overall), parts like should not be taken lightly, in my opinion:

- Jesus: [with the leppers] There's too many of you. Don't push me. There's not enough of me. Stop. Don't crowd me. Leave me alone!

- Mary Magdalene: I don't know how to love him. I don't know why he moves me. He's a man, he's just a man. And I've had so many men before, in very many ways, he's just one more.

- Jesus: God, thy will is hard. But you hold every card. I will drink your cup of poison, nail me to your cross and break me, bleed me, beat me, kill me! Take me now, before I change my mind!

-
Judas: I don't know how to love him... I don't see why he moves me... he's a man! He's just a man! He's not a king; he's just the same as anyone I know!

-
Judas: My mind... is in darkness! My God... God, I'm sick! I've been used! And you knew! You knew all the time! God, I will never know why you chose me for your crime! Your foul, bloody crime! My God, you have murdered me! Murdered me! Murdered me! Murdered me! Murdered me! Murdered...

Plus, the movie ends with Jesus crucified and mention no Resurrection. No miracles from Jesus. I agree it gives a perspective of a simple man, not pointed as being God. Plus, it points as Mary Magdalene as being a prostitute. It follows the Scriptures somehow, pointing to Jesus teaching as being just from a man only, not being God at all. In spite of this, I must admit that I find the movie and the musical work (mostly this) absolutely BRILLIANT. But I simply don´t feel good about it, so God first.

Went to see it live with all original cast except Mary, great performance. Enjoyed it a lot. As far as "point on" no but a great production. I know in its time it got a lot of people stirred up not all bad.

I grew up with this musical as well, and, like you, once I became born again, I didn't feel comfortable with it. And I did stop listening to it.

But after several years and growth in my walk with the Lord, some of the music came back to my mind, and I was able to differentiate between the humanistic, not so biblical parts of this work and focus on much of the good. I still enjoy it, here and there, and find no problem with enjoying it.

Moral of the story: if you feel uncomfortable with it now, by all means, stop listening to it. That is the call of the Holy Spirit directing you and guiding you. You may, one day, come back to it, but it will be with a different perspective. But that's called growth, so not a bad thing.

Yes, it's very important that you follow your heart on all these things. Our church sets up at a local pub every Monday night, with the Pastor leading the group. This would absolutely horrify some people, so they should not even consider doing something like this

I change the lyrics to popular rock songs and sing my own words to the Lord. I make songs up about everything all the time and sing to the Lord about things I'm thankful for or things that He created that I think are awesome (birds, the wind, trees clouds, stars, etc.). I dance thru my house and sometimes in public because I'm so glad for the liberty in Christ and love of God. If you can find anything to praise God about in that film or opera, glory to God! \:D/ I'm sure it blesses the Father when you do.

It's a regular, downtown Irish bar. They have an outdoor section beside the sidewalk, and we set up several tables and put up a small sign saying we are having a Bible Study... Everyone Welcome. Not that many people join us, but the proprietor seems to want us to keep coming every week.

Vi,
Have you ever heard "Santos". They do a lot of Doo Wop, changed to Christian words. I have a CD by them.

I don't really get into Doo Wop, nor do I listen to Christian music per se. The lyrics I make up aren't necessarily "praise and worship" - I sing about anything that's on my heart. LOL I believe God is happy and blessed when I'm singing to him.

For instance, I do a duet with the Holy Spirit with Bryan Adams' song, "Everything I Do". I know it sounds bizarre, but I hear the Lord singing the words to this song to me in my heart and mind and then I sing to Him this chorus:

"There's no love like Your Love
And no other could give more Love
There's no where unless You're there
All the time, All the way"

Disclaimer: I don't look at Jesus romantically like in this video. I reverence the LORD waaaay too much for that and am supernaturally in total awe of HOLY GOD. But my heart loves and adores His heart toward me.
