Dear brothers and sisters,

I´d like to discuss a matter I´ve wondering about for quite some time: the rock-opera "Jesus Christ Superstar".

Ok, first, I must say that I grew up hearing it, loving it very much, in fact, it´s the only opera I know completely from the beginning to the end. In my opinion, it´s the best musical work of the 20th century (please note, musical).

However, we can´t dissociate the music from the movie and...mainly, from the lyrics. Since I became a born again christian, I started to feel unease every time I heard it (in fact, even before that, I felt that sometimes). Therefore I decided to stop hearing it. Although it´s among my favorite musical works of all time, I can´t ignore all the lyrics. So, I decided to stop hearing it or see it!

Nevertheless, I´d like to know your opinion regarding it. What´s your view?

God bless you!
I'm a bit prejudice about that musical. I remember watching it and asking God if he can make himself as real to me as the actor playing him on the stage. God answered. I woke up the next day born again.

I get the writer never trusted God despite creating that, but it still does me good. (I just wish someone would add the final missing act for it -- Jesus rose again!)

I saw the show twice and have seen the film on television. The film in my view is pathetic in comparison to the live performance. The songs are very well written and performed I found the song' I don't know how to love him' to be quite moving having said that it is not really Christian. It was very loosely based on Matthews gospel and I would say that it might have set some people thinking about Jesus and perhaps got them to start searching. Whether you want to listen to the songs is up to you
as long as you keep in mind that it is not according to scripture. My all time favourite show is West Side Story based on Romeo and Juliet. Again the film is not as good as seeing a stage version although Natalie Wood was brilliant in the part of Maria.

The local pub? Hhhmmmmmmm explain please
in the American South, 'juke joints' were not just places for people to drink alcohol & dance. they served as meeting places for the African American community, and it wasn't uncommon for 'church' services to be held there, for lack of any other suitable building. this is how blues music & gospel grew up together, and how 'singing pastors' wound up in the same jails as completely secular musicians after raids.

just a comment.

as far as the musical; i've never seen it and because of how it's been described to me, i got no interest in seeing or hearing it. i'd probably just be offended, and why willingly do that to myself?
i agree with others -- whatever bothers your conscience, you should avoid.

Personally, I didn´t think any of the stage shows or any other version, reached the quality of the movie of the original work. But, hey, to each his own, right? :)
