Yeah, Nazarenes are a tough house. My wife once walked into one wearing pants. The looks, alone, were enough to kill.

To me, personally, raising my hands during praise and worship, (this is usually while they are playing music..ie praise and worship songs) represents surrender. Its like saying "Lord, Im all in!"

Why should I seek the living among the dead?

There are some that believe that it is a sin for a woman to wear pants, regardless whether you are in church or not. Maybe it's a sin for a man to wear a dress, except perhaps for certain denominations. It's a shame the way your wife was treated.

My first church. Was very inhibited, people looked at you weird even if
you tapped your foot.

When I first started to go to a Pentecostal church later, it was real culture
shock, but there was and is never any pressure to do what others are doing,
people just be themselves.

Later I discovered the joy of reaching out to God in worship lifting those hands.
I also feel comfortable just standing praying in quiet contemplation while others
around me are singing. Still at times I might sit down for a moment while others
are standing and so does everyone else.

Its far better to do business with God in whatever posture you feel led, rather than
follow the crowd.

Lol the first church I went to was pentecostal and my brother and I had never been to church, so to fit in we copied them. A few raised their left hand - we gave each other a poke - left hand up, some put their right hand up - poke, whoop our right hand up - they did their hands down - we put our hands down. Serious LOL. It was hard because one did this and the other did that, who should you copy?

Luk 18:9
And he spake also this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and set all others at nought:
Luk 18:10
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
Luk 18:11
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
Luk 18:12
I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I get.
Luk 18:13
But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner.
Luk 18:14
I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

If the Pharisee followed the usual practise of Pharisees he stood and held up his hands. '

Thus it depends on what the raising of the hands signifies TO US at the time

Google Tim Hawkins, a Christian comedian...he does a whole episode on this..just hilarious.
Personally, I have no problem with people doing it.. the only NTscripture I know of is the one in Timothy about lifting holy hands in prayer. I think God is pleased with any loving praise from his silly kids...
