While discussing this scripture, Psalms 34:16, the question came up, "Why would God remove the wicked from the earth, and then turn around and destroy it?" 2 Peter 3:7 & 10
I decided I would put the question out to others, and see what others say on it.

I think the Bible clearly shows that the Earth will be "refurbished" for us to live here.

Revelation 21:1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. 2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.…

After the fire which destroys the wicked, satan, sin and death - God's way of purifying the earth is to burn it getting rid of all the evil that has been here for many years. Then you have the Bible verse above with the new heaven and new earth brought back better than it's former glory of the Garden of Eden... it is made new, sinless and now pure.

2 peter 3:7 . By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

I knoiw you posted with this scripture in there, but to me it says this earth is kept for the destruction of the ungodly. I'm speculating but seems like its purpose is to remain the lake of fire. just again my thought. a lot of theology says its gonna be burned and purified and gonna be the new earth, but honestly a lot of theology is not really in scripture kinda like connecting things that aren't really told us.

I don't think the Earth will be scorched with flames. We make a giant hoopla about flames, all through the Bible, consuming anything and everything, when I don't think such a literal interpretation was ever God's intent. After all, the rocks, birds, bunnies, and trees never did anything wrong, and aren't sinful.

Yet God destroyed animals with the flood. Even though he saved some the majority of them were destroyed.

Your thoughts sound logical, but also since the question was, asked as to why would he destroy it. Are there any scriptures, you can give me that I can use?

Okay, I got some feedback.

First I will like to thank all of you very much for sharing, and my fellow student thank you as well.

Here is what some has said:

If the burning of the earth is literal, then the burning of the heavens is literal. So since God has already clensed the heavens, of Satan and all other evil, why would he need to burn it. Similarly, since he promised to remove the wicked from the earth, the is no need to burn it. It will be refurbished, made new. If the heavens is symbolic, as 2 Peter 3:5, 6 shows, the earth must also be symbolic.

2 Peter 3:
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Other scriptures used were:
Psalm 37:
29 The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever.
34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off.

Proverbs 2:
21 For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it,
22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.

Revelation 11:
18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

In 2 Peter 3:7 we read “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

In
2 Peter 3:10 we read “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

2 Peter 3:12 “Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?”

I believe Peter was confirming by the Holy Spirit what was previously shown to the prophets of old concerning the fate of the earth and the inhabitants left therein at the coming of the Lord. Let’s see if we can gain some more insight into Peter’s testimony above by more scripture.

Psalm 46:6 “The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.”

Psalm 97:3-6 “
A
fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.[SUP]4 [/SUP]His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.[SUP]5 [/SUP]The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.[SUP]6 [/SUP]The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.” (every eye shall see Him
Revelation 1:7)

Nahum 1:5-6 “
The mountains quake at him, and the hills
melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
[SUP]6 [/SUP]Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.”

In Isaiah 24:1 we readBehold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.” And again we see the mention of the inhabitants of the earth being
burned up in verses
[SUP]5 [/SUP]The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

[SUP]6 [/SUP]Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.”

Zechariah 14:12 “And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.”

Luke 17:29-30 “
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.[SUP]30 [/SUP]Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.”

Don't forget all the vegation upon the ground was destroyed also. Of course that goes without saying because the physical laws of nature do not change over time.

There is no absolute that says the heaven and earth will pass away.
The words of God are absolute enough for me. :)

Matthew 24:35
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Mark 13:31
Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Luke 21:33
Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
