I have been confused about the Holy Spirit quite awhile. A few months ago I believed that the Holy Spirit comes and goes, but then a few people told me you receive the Holy Spirit when you become a Christian (accept Christ into your life.) I go to a Pentecostal church and I don't really have a choice (I'm 17) otherwise my mother doesn't really give me the choice of going to another church because she doesn't trust that i'll be out there searching for God. I still try to go along with her church but the whole speaking in tongues and Holy Spirit confuses me. I hear about people receiving the Holy Spirit and I feel so confused because in my mind I say "but I thought you receive the Holy Spirit when you become a Christian." I was already explained about tongues, but I don't know how the Holy Spirit has anything to do with speaking tongues at all or if they have any connection! The church confuses me, and it has many surprises that scare me. I wanted to know because the church sometimes makes me feel confused because the pastor doesn't speak much about the bible but more emphasis on the Holy Spirit and what God has told her for the rest of the people in Church.

So, what is the Holy Spirit exactly? what is it to receive the presence of the Holy Spirit? What does the Holy Spirit do?
I didn't write this, and don't subscribe to everything in it. but i include it as food for thought, the inference being to test everything.

The article (short) proposes the "gift of tongues" does remain today, but that it is also counterfeited by the devil. just search this to get to the article: MIDNIGHT CRY MINISTRIES : MY TESTIMONY Tongues.

MIDNIGHT CRY MINISTRIES : MY TESTIMONY
Tongues Should Be Tested

By GERALD E. McGRAW

Man's initial contact with Satan was disastrous. No wonder Satan is called the father of lies (John 8:44), for he told Eve, "Ye shall not surely die" (Genesis 3:4). Yet sin did produce death. This original encounter warns us that deception is one of the devil's prime weapons.
Satan's duplicity is directed at contemporary Christians no less than at our first parents. Paul expressed his concern to the Corinthian believers: "I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:3).

Some people see the present charismatic movement as the fulfillment of prophecies that a "latter rain" will invigorate Christianity before the rapture of the church. Opponents relegate the phenomenon to spiritual delusion and psychological imbalance. But Scripture does not anticipate a total cessation of spiritual gifts within the present age. There is New Testament evidence that the gifts are divinely intended for the entire church age.

But is it safe to conclude that all contemporary tongues-speaking results from the Holy Spirit's gift? Does Satan duplicate spiritual gifts?
In testing numerous tongues gifts by scriptural criteria my associates and I have found many originating from a satanic source. This article will examine the necessity, methodology and results of such testing.

Was Jesus' death on the cross not sufficient for our salvation? Some of you seem to think so. Baptism is not required for salvation, to say this is an attack on Messiah's death and resurruction.

"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
Romans 10:9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9

"They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household."
Acts 16:31

"But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life."
Titus 3:5-7

"For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power." 1Cor1:17

First of all I really appreciate you backing your opinion up with some real relevant scripture but I would like to explain to you how I see it
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

What Paul is saying in Ephesians is that salvation cannot be earned nor could we ever do anything that would make us worthy of salvation but it is a gift

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

The way we receive grace is through faith. This faith word is the key what does it mean to have faith the kind of faith that Paul is talking about in Eph. Well it is commonly thought that faith means to believe. If we truly believe something then depending on the severity you will act upon it immediately. Ex you accidentally drop a hammer over your foot well you move your foot because you believe (or have faith) it will hit your foot and will hurt .but if you do not move your foot then you probably don’t really believe it is going to hit your foot. James 2:17 even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
If you don’t act on your faith then it is not that same kind of faith that Paul is talking about. Paul was basing his statement on the pretense that faith includes works like it says in James ch 2

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

The only way that these four scriptures work in harmony is that if you have faith (faith with works James 2:17) in what Jesus said in john 3:5 then you will do what is later commissioned by Jesus himself and spoken of in act by peter “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” And you will be saved by grace through faith. It needs to be the kind of faith that is backed up by actions otherwise these three verses would not make sense

Water baptism is symbolic of our baptism into Jesus Christ. It is an outward show of what has actually happened to us spiritually. We have put on Christ Jesus, if we have been baptized into the Spirit.

I have been water baptized, and I have been baptized in the Spirit. Both are important, but I would say that baptism in the Spirit is more so than water baptism. But, neither is necessary for salvation, only to be born of the Spirit, by believing in Jesus Christ, in His resurrection, and confessing Him as Lord. The birth of the Spirit is grace.

I have heard it said that born of water is water baptism, but I don't believe this is how Jesus meant His words to Nicodemous that night. Nicodemous asked Jesus how a man could be born again, that he could not enter the womb and come out again. Our first birth is in the flesh. Our second birth is of the Spirit.

I hope that this helps,
In Christ,

Hi vic,
Thanks for responding. Yes it does help because it has me thinking but I am still unsure. I dont know how to highlight that part of your post which I am commenting on. forgive me.
Am I understanding what you are saying in your first paragraph. We receive the spirit and then we are baptised in the spirit.
Are you saying there are 3 baptisms. The initial one is born of the spirit, and I guess this is the one which you say happens initially???? Then water if it suits us, and then baptism in the spirit. Is the baptism in the spirit the baptism which anoints with gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Is baptised into the spirit the same as the initial "born of the spirit" How is one baptised in the Spirit?

My thoughts were that if you were not baptised in water (having being led by the Holy Spirit to Jesus) then you were not baptised into Jesus therefore you have not died to the old covenant therefore you were still subject to the law and of course a sinner whose sins are counted against him. I view anyone not baptised into Jesus Christ as not being a part of his death. I view the water baptism (not of John's)
Mark 15:16 whoever believes and is baptised will be saved but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Baptism is a work of belief.
Matthew 28: baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey...
I hope you can persevere with me

Deuteronomy 13
1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Of course we can persevere. I look at it this way, (after a very frightening experience with God, in which I was made aware of the facts of salvation in no uncertain term.) When we hear the word, the gospel, and it is witnessed to in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, and we receive this testimony, then the Spirit of God does a wonderful thing, He causes us to be born again of Him, born children of God, and at that time He gifts us with His Spirit forever, to live with us in our heart. He has planted His seed in us, the life that we are to grow into. This is salvation, as this is grace, God drawing near to us, showing us His favor.

Now, of faith, because we have heard Him, heard His testimony of the facts that Jesus has come into the world in the flesh, and has died for us and risen from the dead, and has ascended into heaven to be at the right hand of the Father, all of this testified to us by God, (just as Peter knew that Jesus was the Christ by the testimony of God,) we begin to learn that we are dead to the worldly life that was before. In obedience to God, we submit to baptism of water, to show that we have died and have been raised up in Jesus to new life. (This is the key, because we are dead and buried in Him, and raised up in Him. God sees us this way from the very moment that we receive the Holy Spirit.)

But God has not left us alone, nor has He left us defeated in the world, because He wants us to share in the same glory that Jesus had while here, the glory of being filled with the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God. This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the glory of which Jesus spoke when praying for us, that the glory which the Father had given Him might be ours also, that we may be one, just as He is one with the Father. In this anointing, we find victory in this world, victory over the works of the devil in the life of others. It allows us to participate in the work of Christ in this world, to do the things that He has done, in the very way that He did them.

It may seem like three things, but in Jesus, they are all one thing, just most of the time we do not know of them all at the same time. This is due to how we are taught more than any reason of God's. He would love to see us born of Him, baptized, and filled all on the same day, but sadly, this is almost never the case. For me, it was 30 years from the first to the last.

Blessing in His love,
vic

Hi VW,
Thanks for persevering. It seems that we are in total agreement. First we here the word, and believe and the Holy Spirit leads us to Jesus. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit. In obedience to this we accept the water Baptism being baptised into the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. This obedience then has us being a member of Christ body so we have been baptised into his death and as we have died we are then free from the old covenant and born into the new covenant, laws on our hearts and in our minds etc so in obedience (if you love me you will obey me) we meet the requirements of the law, not as a set of rules but in obedience to our love for God.
Are we in agreement that this baptism into Jesus death happens after the water baptism, because it is hear we have acted in obedience. Previously we were being led by the Spirit to Jesus because of our belief.

The third aspect is baptism in the Holy Spirit which is the anointing with gifts from the Holy Spirit. And that can happen at any time, according to God's plan for us. In some cases it is simultaneous with being born again, prior to water baptism.
The baptism in the Holy Spirit is never revoked. Is that correct?
So where are our differences?

I did not know we had any differences. I only thought you were saying that water baptism was required for salvation. Also, I believe that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is much more than the gifts. In fact, I believe that to fully please God, we must walk in the power of the Spirit.

This is what I have received: Jesus emptied Himself of His godly power and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a path that He opened up for us to follow Him in. Consider that He was born of God, actually conceived by the Holy Spirit, just as we are. When He began His ministry, He went to John and got baptized, and was filled with the Spirit. Then He said of His words and works that they were what He saw and heard His Father in heaven doing and saying. In fact, He said of His words that they were Spirit and they were life. I believe that the parallels are too close to be discounted, and that our words and works should just like His, in the same way, by the same Spirit. If this ever comes about, it will be.a different world tomorrow.

Blessings in Christ,
Vic

Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Hi VW,
Ah aahhhh , it is a good thing you remembered the difference. Yes I do believe that the water baptism is essential for our salvation. To my thinking the water Baptism is our first work of obedience. This is our first "Test" This then baptises us into Jesus's death which then abolishes the old covenant and establishes the new covenant where by we live under grace. Nothing happens until we pass the test of obedience. That is the nature of God. The water baptism of Jesus had to be done to lead the way. I dont see it as a take it or leave it part of Christianity.

Hi again VW,
Yes I fully agree with you that God wants us to reach our greatest potential which is living by the Spirit so that Jesus can use us mightily.
I think many may be too fearful to go out on a ledge in faith and thus limit the work that Jesus can do through them.

When you have accepted Christ as your savior and truly repented of your sins you will receive the Holy Spirit.

Some people do not truly repent of their sins when they come to Christ and do not receive the Spirit.

If you have the Holy Spirit and then go to living in sin the Spirit will not lead you.

Jesus said He will never leave or forsake you.If you live in sin but still believe in Jesus the Spirit will not lead you but repent of your sins and the Spirit will lead you.

The gifts and calling of God are without repentance on God's part.Once you are saved you will be led of the Spirit but if you go to living in sin the Spirit will not lead you but is always there to help you once you have a right heart.

Paul wrote that knowledge would pass away also, in the same passage that he wrote that tongues would pass away. Regardless, the point of his words was that these things would pass away when the perfect came. And, that love would not pass away. And love is what, comes from where? Love is the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

That the gifts have been abused is a given. So has every other doctrine of Christianity. Saved by works, saved by grace, saved by faith, saved by confession, saved by speaking in tongues, saved by whatever. The simple truth is that unless you are born of the Spirit, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

The simple truth of the Holy Spirit is that He comes to us as God. He is to us the love of God, the life of God, the power of God, all because Jesus asked God to send Him, and ascended into heaven so He could come.

But what is even more important is that we need Him, the Holy Spirit, very badly. Yes, He manifested Himself very strongly in the first century of the church, and somehow He has fallen out of favor, not many believe anymore. But He never went away, we have turned our backs on Him
Elisha had to smote the waters to see if they would split; He did not know if his request of a double portion of Elijah's Spirit would rest on him. (He smote the waters because he did not perceive or feel it.)
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, In faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. (2Tim.1:13)
Receive with meekness The Engrafted Word of God, which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21)

So, what is the Holy Spirit exactly? what is it to receive the presence of the Holy Spirit? What does the Holy Spirit do?
1 Corinthians 12:12-13

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves[a] or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

Ephesians
4 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy ofthe calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Romans 8: 9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ

The Holy Spirit indwells at Salvation - born again - new birth does not happen without it. Every born again believer has the Holy Spirit, the question is, does He have you? The Holy Spirit is of complete necessity to the Christian life, because it gives us the things of Christ

The Devil has places scare crows in the fields, so to speak in the topic of the Holy Spirit - charlatans who act scratcho crazy - to make born again believers fear

If someone says that you need to speak in tongues, to be saved, they are either deceived, or a flat out deceiver. I only say that one, because it's always the hot button

You cannot accept, will or decide to let God do anything. He rules over his creation and does as he wills and he chose a people and Saved that people by his shed blood. God is not sitting around hoping you will let him help you or waiting for you to do anything. He's ruling right now and will save each one he died for. I for one am delighted to say so. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so whom he has redeemed from the enemy. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his Goodness to the sons of men.

The bible confirms that we did not receive the Holy Spirit of GOD.
John 14:26
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Jesus promised to his disciple that the father will send a helper in my name which is the Holy Spirit,
Acts2:1-4 when the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. [SUP]2 [/SUP]Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. [SUP]3 [/SUP]They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. [SUP]4 [/SUP]All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[SUP][[/SUP][SUP]a[/SUP][SUP]][/SUP] as the Spirit enabled them.
God sent his holy spirit down to all the disciples and they were speaking in different tongue, and only the disciple where in the house.
Acts 8:14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria.
Acts 8 [SUP]15 [/SUP]When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, [SUP]16 [/SUP]because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
The bible says that, they WE baptised in the name of the lord Jesus Christ but we they did not receive Holy Spirit
Why the people/we did not receive Holy Spirit is because Jesus has promised his disciple that he will send Holy Spirit to them?
Even when they believed and peptised in the name of Jesus Christ why didn’t they receive Holy Spirit?
Because Lord Jesus Christ did not promised the entire people or the world see JOHN 14:17 [SUP]17 [/SUP]the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Also at room, only the 11 disciple are there and they were the only one receive the Holy Spirit and not the entire people.
Acts 8:15-17[SUP]15 [/SUP]When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, [SUP]16 [/SUP]because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [SUP]17 [/SUP]Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Peter and John Placer their hands on them and they receive Holy Spirit. That indicated that they have not receive the Holy Spirit but only the disciple receive the Holy Spirit and they are the ones that can distributer Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:[SUP]15 [/SUP]When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
Acts 8: [SUP]17 [/SUP]Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Since they are the ones that receive the Holy Spirit they have the authority to distribute the Holy Spirit.
Paul also did the same thing on the other side,
Acts 19:1-4, While Apostles was at Corinth; Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples [SUP]2 [/SUP]and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
[SUP]3 [/SUP]So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
[SUP]4 [/SUP]Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” [SUP]5 [/SUP]On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:6-7 [SUP]6 [/SUP]When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. [SUP]7 [/SUP]There were about twelve men in all.
Act 11:15 “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. [SUP]16 [/SUP]Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

They believe in Jesus but they did not receive Holy Spirit, and they did not know what Holy Spirit is all about, they just believe in Jesus Christ.
Paul placed his hands on them and prayed and they receive Holy Spirit.
That indicated the they apostles receive the Holy Spirit and distributing them.
That also indicated that the work of the apostles ceased
That also indicated that the world of the Holy Spirit stated through the apostles.
That indicted the baptism of Holy Spirit, placing the hands on people and praying over them is the baptism of Holy Spirit.
Therefore this is the condition to enter the kings of God.

  1. first we must believe in Jesus Christ (John 3:16) and (John 3:15)
  2. secondly, we must baptised in water and holy spirit (John 3:5-8)
Acts 8:1on that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. [SUP]2 [/SUP]Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. [SUP]3 [/SUP]But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
Acts 8:[SUP]4 [/SUP]Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. [SUP]5 [/SUP]Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there.
Real also Acts 13:46, acts 14:5-6, ACTS 21:11
Isaiah63:10
Great persecution broke out
All apostles were scattered, many have been put to death
Stephen death (acts 8:2)
James put to death by seaward (Act 12-2)
Peter was put in prison and later crucified upside down (Acts 12:4)
All the disciples died during that time, all the work of the Holy Spirit ceased,
But the question is how can we baptise in Holy Spirit to enter the kingdom of God?

we can do any thing like speaking in tongues and heal the sick and do many things but the read evidnance is how did we receive Holy Spirit? or Who is the desciple of Desciple that put laid his hands on us and pray to God for us to receive the Holy Spirit? name the desciple please?

find the last work of the Holy Spirit please?

So then, how were you saved?
You accuse us, yet you offer nothing yourself.
Offer if you have anything, or else you are no better off, according to your interpretation.

Being saved first, then being baptized in the HOLY SPIRIT, are two separate events that can happen at different times, to a believer, according to their faith. First of all let no one deceive you. You can't just go to get saved and automatically think that you received the baptism in the HOLY SPIRIT. The HOLY SPIRIT brings miraculous things to the believer. He brings the gifts of the SPIRIT, the fruits of the SPIRIT, speaking in tongues, although not all speak in tongues. And we're not all supposed to. Speaking in tongues involves prophecy from GOD to his church for edification. and their is another gift that's the gift of interpretation of tongues. there is a false statement going around saying if you don't speak in tongues you don't have the HOLY SPIRIT. FALSE! when Jesus came their were many believers. And were at pentecost also. you see the pattern. Become a believe first, then receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. REMEMBER the followers believed first. Then waited for the HOLY SPIRIT to come. The PROMISE!
