So many people on Christian Chat, including myself, have fallen victim to this disease. Is it really a disease? No, but in a metaphorical way yes.

What I mean is, we keep arguing with each other over scripture etc., when the Bible tells us not to in many different areas. I'm going to post 3 quotes, Matthew which says to try and agree with your adversary quickly, Titus that talks about only warning someone twice about the law as well as not wasting time on arguments, and Galatians which talks about not arguing whatsoever:

[h=3]Matthew 5:25King James Version (KJV)

[SUP]25 [/SUP]Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Titus 3:9-11King James Version (KJV)

[SUP]9 [/SUP]But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
[SUP]10 [/SUP]A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
[SUP]11 [/SUP]Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Galatians 5:19-21[/h]King James Version (KJV)

[SUP]19 [/SUP]Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
[SUP]20 [/SUP]Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
[SUP]21 [/SUP]Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Definition of Variance:
  • change in something: a change that occurs in something
  • difference between things: a difference between two or more things
  • disagreement: a difference of opinion or attitude

Definition of Strife:
  • bitter conflict or rivalry: bitter and sometimes violent conflict, struggle, or rivalry

By the way, I dont know why Titus and Matthew are bolde, I think its because I bolded variance and strife but I dunno. However, we should all read these and realize all our arguments on many threads in the Bible Discussion Forum are actually bad. There shouldn't be some threads with over 1,000 replies of just pure arguing [Salvation and works threads].

Lastly, I am guilty of participating in this, but I'm just saying we all need to learn from this.

My unbiased view is that Theologians
have prejudiced an polarized their followers in order to keep them and have income.
A minister who is sent by Christ knows how to connect a person to Christ
that the person may have a blessed, sometime unspeakable, life.

hey dont worry about boldness,, God loves that i think,, its just some people use that as an excuse to slander you by saying your shouting at them,, i use boldness all the time but not because im shouting but because i belief it is a good shout,, but isnt it a shame that you have to explain everything as to not get accused of slander..anyways very good post.

It would be an interesting study to go back over a random 100 posts or so on CC and see just what turned a 'discussion' into an argument full of strife and debate. I think an observable pattern could be detected in many cases.
I would suspect an unseen cause is frankly some are devoid of the Holy Spirit but that is dangerous ground to tread on as it would make us judges of men; and besides christians aren't above falling prey to the flesh.

Thanks for posting this. I've been thinking of doing something similar but you beat me to it. May I add Eph 4:2-3

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.
3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

I can't say I'm completely innocent but I do try to follow my own advice and not restate my position to someone who didn't seem to want to listen the first time.

By the way, I dont know why Titus and Matthew are bolde, I think its because I bolded variance and strife but I dunno.

to unbold or unitalicize copy-pasted text, when you type a post you need to:

  • hit "go advanced" (not just quick-reply)
  • hit "preview post"
  • select everything in your reply (the interface won't always recognize that a selected portion of text is bold or italic)
  • hit bold or italic, making everything bold or italic, then hit bold/italic again - unbolding/unitalicizing everything
  • now you can make whatever specific sections you like bold or italic.

copy-pasted text carries formatting with it sometimes that isn't overwritten by the formatting you want to apply until after you preview the post in "advanced mode" -- the same thing can happen with text color, size and font.

:)

I urge Eudora and I urge Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Philippians 4:2 (emphasis mine)

We have much more in common than not!

Yeah, there are a lot of threads I don't even read. I know what the Bible says and I am not going to argue with someone for 20 pages. I will state what I believe and what the Bible says and may reply, but that is generally it. The most I have stayed on a thread is the athiest one as they are not even believers and I believe, personally, that I need to serve as a witness.

But a lot of these threads I just "wipe the dust off my feet and walk away."

Also, I have never heard so many unbiblical ideas as I have on this site. It shocks me what people believe and still call themselves Christian. Anything from sex before marriage to universalism to The apostle Paul's writings are wrong. I never knew there was such deep error out there.

i will stand for the truth, but if I feel someone doesn't want the truth, then I walk away.

David,
how blessed you are start a brand new day with our Lord putting it upon your heart
to proclaim the edifying and building-up of one another.

you have inspired several heartfelt and gracious responses,
TY.

this basic concept that you have shared has many, many fruitful-branches.

oh boy, let me count how many times I have put my foot in my own mouth!:p

my husband and I often critique one another concerning our conversation,
so that we may improve ourselves on a regular basis.
(this is not an infrequent occurrence), but, we share a mutual agreement
to correct one another in love = takes a lot of practice and forgivness!

marriage is a great proving ground for the 'mastery of the tongue',
do I hear an amen!

we pray that the next poster keep the Spirit of this thread,
and the next......
and the next.....
