So I posted a prayer request in the prayer request forum; Am I wrong with my interpretation of the scripture referenced?

I would like prayer for my dad whom I've haven't seen in 9 yrs. There might be a problem w/ his heart, he is a nonbeliever and it burdens me to know he may die without being saved. Thank you

Thank you, however, I don't rely on that scripture just because I feel salvation is personal and on an individual basis. I mean I understand that a believers faith/actions/person may bring another member of your household to see Christ/Holy Spirit in you and make them want to know about him hence lead them to Christ and be saved, but not so much saved just by my faith if that makes any sense. Just an opinion idk.

I see nothing at all wrong with that. Most family members our friends are prayed into salvation. Meaning that by you or someone else constantly praying for them, the Holy Spirit comes and convicts their heart and they accept Christ.

but, just keep in mind that you or the person praying did not save them, I had to attach this disclaimer or I would get a thousand post telling me that you can not pray some one into salvation.

see how much more clear it is when you read it with a little context:

And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said,
“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
And they said,
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.
(Acts 16:29-34)

it reads to me as though they meant at least in part that the gospel was for his whole house, not just him.
and i think too it's safe to assume the jailer was the head of his own household.
but notice that every one of them heard the gospel, received it, and his whole family were baptized, and everyone was rejoicing over it!

i don't think that this means that everyone who believes, all their family are automatically-in-Christ. besides, how many cousins out does that go? it leads to many silly questions. but for sure anyone who believes becomes a testimony of God to their family, and ultimately everyone's relationship with God is between them and God, not anyone else.

Yes I agree although its more complicated than just pick up and drive down the street to see him. He is in another country which makes it harder, but I intend to as soon as possible. And I pray for him and ask God not to harden his heart.

I hope the travel arrangements work out - I had a similar issue, my dad was in the UK when he took bad after surgery on a broken hip - I arrived at the hospital only around 18 hours before he passed away - I sat with him all the time and through the night.

Give him a phone call if you can. I'm sure he will be glad to hear from you.

I had something similar happen with my father. Although we were in contact, he totally rejected Christ, no matter how much I prayed, and how much I witnessed to him.

Then he had his first cardiac incident, and he realized he was not going to live forever. My husband and I repeated the gospel again, and he believed and was saved! He died 5 months later, never leaving the hospital again. He became a bold witness to the nurses, doctors and other staff and patients. I read him the Bible every day and prayed with him.

My grandmother prayed for him from the day he was born, as she was a strong Christian. I got saved the year before my grandmother died, and started praying for my family, including my father. So he had 83 years of prayer. Did God save him because of the prayer? I cannot tell you. I just know God called me to pray for my parents and my family, and God is sovereign and saved him.

I do believe the combined presentation of the gospel by my husband and myself helped him understand his need for Christ. But we did not "save" him. God alone could do that.

Please go and reconcile with your father. If his time is short, you can fix things up so you can live at peace with yourself, even if he does not turn to Christ in your presence, he still can reflect on your words, and Christ can change his heart.

Praying for you to be able reach your father before he dies.

Yes I hope so too, a family meeting was called to discuss that matter. I am glad you were able to spend time with your dad before he passed. :)

Oversimplification has resulted in many misunderstandings when it comes to God’s Word, the Bible. For example the jailer asked a question about salvation. Paul answered: “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will get saved.” Many have concluded from this that simple mental acceptance of Jesus is therefore all that is required for salvation!-Act 16:31.

This is an oversimplification. True, belief in Jesus as our Ransomer is essential. But it is also necessary to believe what Jesus taught and commanded, to acquire a full understanding of Bible truths. This is shown by the fact that Paul and Silas subsequently “spoke the word of Jehovah to [the jailer] together with all those in his house.” (Acts 16:32) Salvation also involves obedience. Paul later showed this when he wrote that Jesus “became responsible for everlasting salvation to all those obeying him.”-Hebrews 5:9.

Heartfelt acceptance of the shed blood of Jesus is essential if we are going to be saved. Jesus indicated what salvation means for us when he said: “I give them everlasting life, and they will by no means ever be destroyed.” (John 10:28) For most, salvation will mean everlasting life on an earth restored to paradisaic perfection. (Psalm 37:10, 11; Revelation 21:3, 4) In the case of a “little flock,” however, it will mean ruling with Jesus in his heavenly Kingdom.-Luke 12:32; Revelation 5:9, 10; 20:4.

Some suggest that belief in Jesus is the end of the matter. “There is just one thing that any one needs to do to get to heaven,” says one religious tract. “That is, to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour, surrender to Him as Lord and Master, and openly confess Him as such before the world.” Thus, many believe that a sudden, emotional conversion experience is all we need in order to guarantee everlasting life. However, to concentrate on only one essential requirement for salvation to the exclusion of the others is foolhardy.

This becomes more evident considering the comments of some who at one time thought that professing belief in Jesus was all that was needed to be saved. One comment says: “I was raised in the Brethren Church, but I came to wonder why, if everlasting life is dependent solely on Jesus, he himself said: ‘This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.’”-John 17:3.

This scripture convinces many that they are saved. But more is required than an emotional profession that Jesus Christ is their Savior.-Matthew 3:8; Acts 3:19.

Yes, believing in Jesus is crucial to our salvation, but more is needed. Jesus spoke of some who professed faith in him and even did “powerful works” in his name. But he did not recognize them because they were “workers of lawlessness” and did not do the will of his Father. (Matthew 7:15-23) The disciple James reminds us of the need to “become doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves with false reasoning.” He also said: “You believe there is one God, do you? You are doing quite well. And yet the demons believe and shudder…. Faith without works is dead.”-James 1:22; 2:19, 26.

There are those that argue that those who are genuinely saved do all these things anyway. But that is not really the case in practice. Some people who consider themselves as ‘saved’ feel no great need to examine the Scriptures because they think they already have all they need for salvation.” Indeed, the hypocrisy and unchristian acts of many who claim to be saved have brought the whole subject of salvation into disrepute.N

evertheless, many insist that the Scriptures say: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.” (John 3:36, King James Version) Therefore, they conclude that once you have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, you can never again be lost. “Once saved, always saved” is their watchword. But is that what the Scriptures really say? To answer this, we need to consider everything the Bible says on the subject. We would not want to ‘deceive ourselves with false reasoning’ by reading only selected parts of God’s Word.

Notice the inspired warning of the disciple Jude. He wrote: “Beloved ones, though I was making every effort to write you about the salvation we hold in common, I found it necessary to write you to exhort you to put up a hard fight for the faith that was once for all time delivered to the holy ones.” (Jude 3) Jude write this because he knew that individual Christians could still lose the ‘salvation they hold in common.’ He went on to say: “I desire to remind you . . . that Jehovah, although he saved a people [the Israelites] out of the land of Egypt, afterwards destroyed those not showing faith.”-Jude 5.

Jude’s warning would be pointless if Christians did not face a danger similar to that of those Israelites. Jude was not questioning the value of Jesus’ sacrifice. That sacrifice has saved us from Adamic sin, and Jesus will protect those who exercise faith in him. No one can snatch them out of his hand. But we can lose that protection by doing what was done by many Israelites.

QUOTED:

Arminian..."Don't pray for your dad, it will intefere with his free will!"

Calvinist... "Don't pray for your dad, if he is elect he will be saved regardless"

Scripture..."First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,"
(1Ti 2:1)

END QUOTED...........

.........goodness........you REALLY, REALLY don't understand the concept of free will doya? .............sigh.........

Of course you should pray for loved ones who are not saved................pray that it be God's will to move upon their hearts to bring them under conviction of the Holy Spirit to realize their need for the Lord Jesus Christ in their lives as Saviour.

And this DOES NOT impede their "free will." Reason being, when they are brought under conviction by the Holy Spirit, they STILL must accept or deny Christ. Acts 16:31 should not be misunderstood though..................everyone in that "house" heard the "Good News" and everyone in that "house" BELIEVED........

Just because you or I are a Christian and believe in the Name of Jesus does NOT make our children or brothers or sisters Christians...........just saying........

Concentrate on James 5:11-16.......good passage of Scripture concerning this

never did I say that me being christian means my dad is christian or that I question his free will, I simply was stating that I don't believe that verse means that he will be saved just by me believing in Christ without him having a relationship w/ Him.

And I do pray for him and for many other people who don't know Him.

I don't appreciate the condescending tone, however, I do thank you for the Bible verses mentioned.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Yes, if you believe you will be saved;
& if your household believes they will be saved.

David believed,
but it is highly unlikely that Absalom was saved.

Cursed is he who hangs on a tree.

Samuel was a godly man; but his sons were not.
Yet a son of an ungodly son was godly,

Heman, the He-man!

Apparently Heman wrote a chapter of the Bible, a Psalm.

ROFL, chortal, guffaw.

That 's a good one, RehBein.

But your statement is wrong about "Calvinist." Instead of "Calvinist" put idiot. I don't deny that some have gone to pot with the hyper-Calvinism. I came across this Camper dude Witless of the Truth who vociferated how one should not tell anyone to trust Christ as Savior, lest you interfere with election or something. And he didn't know if he were saved or not -- it would all be a matter of election.

But what you claim does not follow from being a Calvinist or believing in election. If the end is pre-determined, so are the means. So prayer for someone's salvation would be a matter of foreordination as well as the outcome in salvation. People are not saved "regardless." People are saved by means. The savee does no works, but the Lord does lots of works to save Him, one of which would be generally sending a messenger with the Word of God.

Still, it was a pretty good joke.

True, belief in Jesus as our Ransomer is essential. But it is also necessary to believe what Jesus taught and commanded, to acquire a full understanding of Bible truths..
How full Mark? They need a seminary degree before they can be saved? All required was to understand the object of the faith sufficiently to actually trust the real Lord Jesus as Savior.

You want the whole 9 yards for Eternal Security you say?

Jehovah redeemeth the soul of his servants;
And none of them that take refuge in him shall be condemned.
Ps 52
But as for me, I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God:
I trust in the lovingkindness of God for ever and ever.
I will give thee thanks for ever, because thou hast done it;
1 Thes 5 end:
"And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He Who calls you, Who will also do it.

Col 3
If then ye were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth. For ye died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall be manifested, then shall ye also with him be manifested in glory.

2 Thes 2:16
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.
End of Rom 8:
And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose. For whom
he foreknew,
he also foreordained to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren: and whom
he foreordained, them
he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom
he justified, them
he also glorified.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 3He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things? Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth; who is he that condemneth? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Even as it is written,
For thy sake we are killed all the day long;
We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

< 1 Pet 1
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy begat us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

THE OVERCOMER
Revelation 3:5
The one who overcomes will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father… 1 John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is begotten of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. And who is he who overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of the throne saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he shall dwell with them, and they shall be his peoples, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God: and he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more; neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more: the first things are passed away. And he that sitteth on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he saith, Write: for these words are faithful and true. And he said unto me, They are come to pass. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit these things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.

In II Thess. 3:3 “But the Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and guard you from the evil one.”

In II Tim. 1:12 he sounds a note of rejoicing: “For I know Him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that He is able to guard that which I have committed unto Him against that day.”
< 2 Tim 4:18
The Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will save me unto his heavenly kingdom;

2 Tim 1:8-9
… God; who saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before times eternal,

2 thes 2:16-17 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 10:27-29
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

1 John 5:10-13
Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Hebrews 9:15
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
Ephesians 1:1-23
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus
Ephesians 1:11
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

< ps 138
thy right hand will save me.
Jehovah will perfect that which concerns me:
Thy lovingkindness, O Jehovah, endureth forever;

Heb 11:19ff

And these all, having had witness borne to them through their faith, received not the promise, God having provided some better thing concerning us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

Isaiah 26:12
Jehovah, thou wilt ordain peace for us; for thou hast also wrought all our works for us.

Eph 2
but God, being rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace have ye been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus: for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, that no man should glory. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God afore prepared that we should walk in them.

Philip 1:6
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.
